Mysterious......
I don't know what it is, where it came from, or how it got to where I found it. But it sure caused an engine knock that had me thinking my '56 was about to need a major engine redo. I do know it's made of brass, and found it's way into combustion chamber #3. Any ideas? Looks like the tip of a metering jet......but I'm not missing any. Tractor ran fine......other than the gut wrenching knock.

Re: Mysterious......
Not sure about the size, but if it is small enough to go through a spark plug hole I would suspect part of the check valve assembly from a compression tester.

Re: Mysterious......
Looks kinda like half of a valve spring retainer. Might be a bit too small for that though.

I've checked my compression testers and they're not missing anything.

Could be from somebody else's compression tester. It could have been sitting someplace harmless for who knows how long. (Granted, it may not be likely that it sat somewhere for years then moved, but it is possible.)

Re: Mysterious......
The shape is similar to where you break through a piece of metal when cutting with hole saw, but I cannot imagine ay reason for a piece of scrap like that being in a cylinder, which is why I wondered about part of a compression tester.

Re: Mysterious......
The head was off little over a year ago when I cleaned up the valve train, and I did test compression afterwards. The piece does look like pressure related, being brass with a small hole in the center. It's plausable that it was from a previous owner......just curious where it was hiding all this time......doesn't matter too much.....just one of many head scratchers that seem occur around here.

Re: Mysterious......
Knowing that the head was off +guessing that you looked at that head underside + cleaned it, it is hard to believe that part was wedged against the head without you seeing it.
I lean toward thinking that it was around the plug and fell in during plug removal. I try to clean the areas and blow air around plugs before removing them blind with the hood on. -like my buddy Bill Hudson taught me.
You may just have to add this one to "Harolds" X-FILES?

Re: Mysterious......
Is it like a washer folded over or is there a chunk missing from one side?

Re: Mysterious......
Yes it's folded....almost in half. I had the head blasted before reinstalling it so it was clean. That's a compression test I'm holding with the mystery piece on the tip. Should be able to fire it back up tomorrow. Hopefully running like it's old self again.
