Ok guys - HELP !! Before I twist off more head bolts than desired (none!) any precautions you would recommend would be appreciated. Do not think the head has been removed since new??? 1959 Unfortunately my electric impact wrench does not have an adjustable setting - it's either full blast or nothing.

Best tip I can give you is don't get too upset when they break off, take your time when drilling them out and replace all of the bolts when reassembling. Oh yeah, keep your fingers crossed. Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear.

Dusty, I assume you've already sprayed some sort of Kroil, WD-40 or something and allowed it to set for a while. I would imagine a pull handle and gradual pull would be better than an impact. Just my thoughts, I've never considered an impact on a head bolt. I guess at this stage of the game you need to hope there is enough of the bolt left above the head to give it another try. In my experience that is just opposite. There's a reason it's called a "breaker bar" because you're going to break something! An impact, especially an adjustable setting, will rattle the fastener (hit, release, hit, release......) Not saying you can't twist off something with an impact. I was removing 1/2" fine thread bolts that held spindles onto a mower deck. Three spindles, four bolts each. Twisted two bolts off with breaker bar. Came back next day with impact took out the remaining 10 bolts, none twisted.

I'd take you up on that Bill, but I don't want to drag it all the way to FL (but you just might see it at the Bash!). Friend does have an adjustable air impact wrench which is kind of the way I'm leaning right now. Yep, have dosed them w/liquid wrench. Thanks, Dusty B

Tap the bolt with a hammer a few times, give them a good wack, use an impact with the pressure turned down. take your time if it is not crossed threaded it will come out 99% of the time.I think spraying it serves no purpose other than wasting penetrent'

I agree with boss! Smack em with a small pein hammer. Worked for me!!

I smack them, with a hammer, a few times, then use the air wrench, on low. Works most of the time. I've had a few, that broke.

Hey Guys,
Just been thu with this same thing (broke off 4 )Yeah no use spraying them as one would have to get to the underside of the bolt( at the water jacket).I will not bother to try to remove them,by useing the head as a jig bolt it down, wih a 25/64 drill, drill them out then heli coil them useing 3/8-16 inserts.

I wounder if one could block the lower outlet on the block,then fill the block with a mix of 1-9 cow fed molassis let it set for a couple of weeks. I do know this mix works very well removeing rust.

Haven't heard of that one Vern! Think I w/stick w/my electrolysis tank considering I don't have a cow to process the molasses! LOL !!! Dusty B

That must be MOO-lasses! I've heard that it works, for rust removal. Is that why cow turds are brown, and cow gizzards, are white?

All of the 1/2'' impacts I have used in the last 30 years, the adjustment only adjusts the torque in the clockwise direction. Adjusting the air pressure will change both directions. Counter clockwise is full steam.

My Ingersoll Rand and Mac both have less torque both ways
