Original equipment??

Getting ready to do a valve job on my loboy and of course ran into extra pieces. Is this a rotator valve setup? Did they install these in '59 cubs new?? PO' s son does not think this tractor has ever been overhauled and pistons appear to be standard. Should I just bite the bullet and replace all valve setup, springs & all?? 20 -20 hind sight should have just put new radiator and head on it and buttoned it back up!! (have 2 of these coming apart). But the hood is off!!!!! Dusty B

Valve rotators were an option. A good idea if mowing was the primary chore.

Dusty, I have no experience with rotocaps, but looked at Messick's website. They are still available ($17 x 4).

I would replace or reuse the rotors. Helps keep down the burning of the exhaust valves.
Quick look at the parts manuals, the valve springs are the same with or without the rotors. If the parts are good, use. If not, replace.

If you replace valves, the rotocaps use a different valve.

Bob - e-mailed Messicks, they say not available?! Plan "B" - does anyone on the forum have some in their junk box left over from a rebuild or valve job?? Plan "C" - Keep good rotor on exhaust valves, replace rotors on intake w/solid rotors??! Plan "D" - replace entire valve system when TM gets off vacation! Hate to go to that expense - valves are in good shape and have plenty of margin to be ground! Please check the "wanted" classifieds !!!!! Thanks - still open for suggestions! Dusty B

Correction. Valve springs used with rotor cap are different.
I ran into the problem of no rotor caps available when I rebuilt my Cub's engine several years ago. There are a bunch of Cubs without rotor caps. Depending on parts condition, the least expensive route would be to reuse the intake valve parts and replace the springs and caps on the exhaust valves.
Question Dusty. Do you have rotors on the intake valves as well as exhaust valves? If so you probably have 4 good rotors to put back on the exhaust valves.
Once you get everything apart, cleaned up, check the parts manuals to determine a repair plan.

Eugene - looking at it from cost angle - what it I used springs and caps from Katrina (think they were solid) and just bought new intake valves? I agree the rotor caps would be more effective on the exhaust valves than on the intake - wouldn't that work? W/have to dig out the old block & parts from Katrina (think the margin on the valves were getting thin, reason for new valves). Thanks for the input. Dusty B

Sponsor to the rescue again!!! JP salvage parts have used rotor caps $2 ea. - still available from IH, new, $21.75 ! This problem solved for the time being anyway! LOL ! Dusty B

Last small engine needing the valves ground - - - found out that new valves were only slightly higher in price than the cost of having the valves ground.
Besides the cost factor, new valves were in the store the next day. Having the valves ground would take a week to 10 days.

W/probably just lap these in by hand - not in bad shape. Or have a friend in antique auto club w/old fashioned valve machine, does them reasonable (free last time) if I want to go that way! Ready to put it back together!! Work time seems to get shorter in the winter. LOL !! Thanks, Dusty B
