The mag alone is worth the $100.00.

The cub is coming along nicely. I have the new/used front bolster installed along with the front axle. I have a question. On the front bolster where the doglegs of the hood mount. Are the threaded holes 10-24unc or 1/4-20unc? The reason for asking I have a bolt on each side broken off. On the left side the rearward hole is 1/4-20 and on the right side the forward hole is 10-24. (probably does not matter) Next question......On the air cleaner; what is the purpose of the copper tubing from the block to the upper tube?

Side note I disassembled the rest of the other motor and put on the shelf. Crank was ground .030 on all mains and rod journals and the block bored .030 over.

The screws are 10 - 24 thread, 1/2 inch long.

In the left rear position, it is possible that the original bolt broke off, and it was drilled and tapped for the next size up.

Be very careful if you are doing any drilling into the bolster where the doglegs attach...it is very easy to go through the housing wall into the water section causing a leak. BTDT!!!! :(

That's a crankcase vent tube, intended to burn crankcase vapors rather than vent them to the air. That tube was eliminated on later tractors, I don't think it was very effective. They are often plugged, so you should clean it and the fitting where it enters the front of the block.

Great Thread and nice Cub to restore. You don't see as many 55 models with an original fast hitch and weights. I feel like it would be a good idea for you to start your own "Restoration Thread" from the looks of the work you did on your truck. You seem very knowledgeable and your work shows it! Looking forward to future posts and lots of pictures.

coralhead wrote:Are there any areas to check on the block to look at in particular. Before pressure washing I inspected the outside of the block and could not see any tell tale signs of rusty cracked areas. After washing I looked over pretty well and did not see any problem areas. Could the cracked head be the result of putting cold water into a hot motor? The lower radiator cores are cracked and split. I have decided that I will go ahead and buy a new radiator when the time comes. I am currently working on drilling out a few broken head bolts. I made a drill Jig to help align the bit to aid in step drilling the broken bolt out. Does it hurt to put torch heat on the area to help loosen up the rusted bolt? Is an easy out the best way to remove these (I've had one break) or drilling them out to the tap drill size and retapping to clear the thread? Just looking for some advise. Thanks

Nice jig. The way I have done this and just repaired 4 broken ones, is to install the head bolt down at the four corners . then drill out for hili coils the head acts as the drill jig.
Just one way of doing it.

I was able to get Grandpa's Cub running last night. Good news and not so good news.
Good news is it started, The hydraulics worked, The radiator held water(new), The bolster did not leak. Had good oil pressure.

Bad news is there was a lot of blowby out of the oil breatherand did not have that great of compression to start with. Had some coolant leak back into the oil but I account that as coming from a used head gasket.

My main goal was to hear and see it run again and see the oil pressure. I drained the oil and coolant and will be pulling the head to check the bores for ring size. New rings and possible journal bearings (as long as they are apart) seem to be my next step.

I pulled that from a Kohler horizontal shaft motor I had sitting in the garage.

Re: Grandpa's Cub ReRing

Well I pulled the head and pistons this evening and took some measurements on the rod journals and the cylinderbores. The journals are 1.498/1.499 and the cylinders have not been bored as well. Looks like I will be able to hit them with a hone to break the glaze and go with standard rings. I am probably going to put in new rod bearings as well since I have them out.

Question: Are the letters stamped next to the cylinders ( C C D B ) there when the engine was put together for piston fit?

Yes.

Here's a page from the GSS-1007 Engine Blue Ribbon Service Manual from Rudi's server.
