The Winter That Just Won't Quit

Postby ricky racer » Mon Feb 03, 2014 7:33 pm

Now most everyone here knows I enjoy plowing snow with my Cub. I feel lucky to have made the decision to push the snow back quite a ways to make room for new snow but dog gone it, I'm running out of room for this stuff. It seems like I am plowing every other day or so. Today I came home from work today and used the nice weather to again try to push back the snow yet again to allow for the new snow we are suppose to get tomorrow night. They are calling for 4"-10" again tomorrow night then a big storm this weekend.

The west side of the gravel driveway is the worst side due to drifting. It's pretty hard to push back because of the old snow there that is kind of like concrete now. The ol' Cub keeps clawing and pushing it back but the Cub can only do so much.

Image

Near the road the snow get deeper and heavier due to the county snow plows throwing the snow off the road and into the driveways. Currently it is about 60" deep. Down the road here you can see where the county front end loaders pushed the snow back the other day so the plows can push the snow back further and get ready for the next accumulation.

Image

On the west end of the barnyard the snow is really building up. I've been pushing it back again and again. From the area that I first pushed the snow to where I can push it now, I've lost about 30 feet of yard. It's almost hood high all the way across.

That's the reason I use a snowblower instead of a plow.

You're "hiding" in Florida, Don., not blowing snow!

Ricky, it sounds like you had better get busy on that Loader Project!

But as much as you like pushing snow, perhaps you should start with this:

I know what you mean. A good snow blower is the best way to handle snow but I got tired of getting the snow blowing back in my face and pushing it with the Cub is so much more fun!! :{_}:

And the fact that I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box doesn't help either. My John Deere with the snow blower mounted on it is parked in the white shed on the right in the photo below. With several months of snow plowed up in front of the shed I am pretty sure the snow blower would never chew its way through the concrete like snow so the Cub is my only form of snow removal. I do own a shovel but that ain't going to happen!!

I noticed you are not far from this place. I also noticed they rent Caterpillar D-5s.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Bill's D-5 suggestion sounds pretty good. With maybe 12" of snow on the way tomorrow, I was wondering where I was going to push the next snow. I have been pushing the snow with my 61 Cub and 54A blade. The little Cub has done the job very well. I decided today that I better pick up the big piles of snow and move them. I used my Farmall 460D with a loader but it struggled trying to get traction. I had it stuck on the ice under the snow enough to wish I had a D-5 around the farm. I would settle for a TD340. You are right Ricky this winter just will not quit!

Avoid pushing snow to the windward side of the driveway. A big pile of snow just causes a larger snow drift in the driveway. Push the snow downwind so the drifts will form beyond the driveway. Of course, you can still be bitten by a storm that blows in from the wrong side. But you may get through the whole winter without that happening.

Well having knee surgery Rick is keeping me down a little. I showed my wife how to use the snow blower I told her tractor is next she said no. I'm so tired of this crap.

I'm out in Wapakoneta this week. Great week to be in Western Ohio... we are scheduled to get "6-10" tonight. I guess from previous predictions, that means we will get 12-15 instead. And me without a Cub out here!

Sure feels like the winter of 1978 when I was a kid... Lots of snow and COLD...

I'm really glad I pushed snow about 35 feet into the grass. It's now all the way to our turn around. 3-4 feet high 30 feet wide and 35 feet. Same thing with the road conditions and snow. 5 feet at spots. A house down the road has 13-15 foot snow on each side of the driveway all the way to the house. They live near a huge field with no wind block. A very large front end loader dug them out. The path from the barn to the driveway is now almost 2/3 of the cubs wheel high on both sides. I actually got stuck with the last storm. The drawbar was lifting the tractor up because the snow was so packed under it. Luckily my dad decided to help with shovel duty and after 3 hours we got the drive clear, a path the te mailbox, the porches clear, and my path to the drive clear. I'm ready for some snow melt!
