Farmall Cub

YIKES!!!!!! I decided to go ahead and rebuild my "spare" '55 cub touch control (hydraulic block) rather than take it to DSCF (since I want to concentrate on my transmission rebuild). As I removed the Safety Valve the last part out of the boring should have been the Safety Valve Bushing Tension Spring, a wavey washer. Well, it came out in 4 pieces! May have been installed cockeyed and was broken upon reassembly...don't know, but I called the local IH dealer, and that little puppy is about FORTY FIVE DOLLARS!! Couldn't have been the one that looks the same (Pressure regulator spring) which is only about $12! Noooo... sheesh!

Well, guess I should be happy it is even available, right??!!

Makes me wonder what a Cub would cost if Case IH built them now. I also wonder if they are still making these parts or if these are NOS parts. In any event it is hard for me to imagine the justification for charging $45 for a wavy washer.

I guess you could get an "estimate" on what they would cost by taking a typical sale/list price for a New Cub in a certain year then converting that dollar amount using an inflation calculator for this year. It would give you an idea at least.

You better give McMaster Carr a call. Those wavy washers are about $10 to $15 each.

Also, if you try the "inflation calculator" the $700 1947 Cub is estimated at about $7500 now. My guess is that's about half of what it would actually cost, and my estimate would be in the $15,000 range.

How difficult is a transmission rebuild? Would like to do one on my cub this spring... 2nd gear is clunking.. 1st and 3rd are very quiet.

Tractor needs to be split at the transmission/bell housing location. I have helped rebuild two on a workbench. Here is a good pic from TM Tractor. http://www.tm-tractor.com/gtr/locations_001.htm

a late 70s cub was in the $5,000 range , That would put it in the $20,000 range

The tranny rebuild is probably the most difficult of the jobs on a Cub other than a complete engine rebuild. The only reason it is so tough is that there is a lot of "in and out" detail work to get the gear lash and bearing preload just right so that it doesn't wear prematurely. It is one job that I haven't done on the cubs that I have worked on. I just oped to go with a quiet transmission from either a newer cub or a cadet in order to make my tranny quiet. What that has left me with are two trannys that are noisy and sitting on my floor awaiting my gumption to rebuild them.

From what I have seen when others have done it, the jobs are not that "hard" but they are time consuming and require a real attention to detail. If you are not under a time crunch and want to "putter around with it" it can be done!

I haven't done one, yet, which is why I decided to get the Touch Control out of the way before DSCF, so I can concentrate on the transmission rebuild. Hope I can get lots of help because...

After reading the procedure several times, I decided this is one of those tasks that I must SEE to learn, rather than read about it!! The preload and backlash procedure, I HOPE, will be simpler than it reads!!

Soooooo, BIGHOSS, are you going to be at DSCF?! I sure could use the for my first tranny rebuild! And thanks for the link to TM...they are one of the BEST references around (as well as parts source, of course!), but I didn't even think about them for the photos.

I remember in late 1979 or 1980 I went to Rish equipment in Boardman Ohio. They had two international cub tractors in the show room . the price tag was $7700.00 with fast hitch. Also there was a few late model numbered loboys with about the same price on them.

Yep, the TN boys are planning to be there. Also, if JimT (from TN) is there, he is a good hand with tranny's. I spent over $300 on seals and bearings on my 47. I used the original gears. We will be glad to help.

Not intending to stray the topic of the thread but I find old information very intresting. Is there a reference that would have the list prices and sale prices of farmall Cubs (and other tractors if I may) with their respective attachments? Maybe something in the WHS archives?

20 thou---for a cub? man--harleys don't cost that much--at least mine didn't no wonder wifie won't let me buy another cub
