Farmall Cub

I have an elderly man down the road that put a new clutch and throw-out bearing in his FCUB Ser # 54212, and when he started it and tried to use it, the clutch started making all kinds of noise. I pulled it apart for him and found that the clutch pressure plate fingers were broken and cracked and I could see where they had made contact with the throwout bearing carrier, also the clutch disc was in backwards (nose to engine). Do you have any idea what could have happened other than backwards disc? Thanks- john

Most likely the fingers were never adjusted, they need to be set at 1 1/4 inch from the plate in the pressure plate. This is a very common thing to have happen. 90% of the people that install clutches in cubs do it incorrectly.

Hats off to you for helping your neighbor out! There is a "how to" on adjusting the clutch fingers as well as other useful information if you intend on helping him get it back up and going. (I hope you wedged the front axle when you split it. ) Soak the new throw out bearing in CHEAP grease for a bit to let it absorb the grease, then use the same cheap grease to lube it, search the forum, lots of discussion on this.
