Always something...
If I had any hair, I would probably pull it out.... I am nearly done with my new cub. Last night I got the alternator mounted, petronix installed, and all the new wiring done. I fired it up and it purrs like a kitten. Then I noticed it... Oil coming out of the front seal like it wasn't even there. I am not looking forward to changing it. I was hoping to have this tractor running, so I could plow my garden this weekend. I don't think that will be happening.
I guess I shouldn't complain, but it does get frustrating.

Look on the bright side; It could have been the rear seal! This is easy to say from here but I do know how frustrating it can get when things seem to keep going wrong.

Don't try pulling the front pulley, without the proper puller, or a large bearing separator. Regular pulley pullers will snap the flanges off the pulley.

And don't try to turn the nut on the back of the fan shaft, you will break the flange on the front cover.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Personally, I'd rather split Eddie than pull the front pulley.

Better yet, put a wrench on the nut to keep it from turning, while you unscrew the fan. My rear nut was so frozen it turned on its own and broke the ears anyway.

Re: Always something...
I may get lucky for once. I cleaned the oil off the seal from last night and started it again. It ran for about 5 minutes and didn't drip a single drop on the floor. I am going to start it again tomorrow and see what happens. Perhaps it was just dried out from sitting so long. It would be really nice if I got lucky this time.
I did notice an intermittent noise while it was running. It sounds like something scrapping across a piece of tin. I can't tell where it's coming from exactly. The oil level is good and it has great oil pressure. Maybe this is something else that needs a little run time to work itself out.

Re: Always something...
Noise could be a fan blade touching the shroud as it comes around.
I had that happen once.

Re: Always something...
Not that I would recommend it for the long run, but you can run the cub with that oil leak in the front long enough to get the jobs done that you need to do. Just check the oil frequently to make sure that it is not low and keep it topped up. When you are done with your urgent task, you can attack the changing of the oil seal.
If it leaked once, it will leak again soon. The seal is definitely going, but it is not "urgent" to get it changed until such time as you use "too much" oil...
My opinion only!
Mike

Re: Always something...
the front seal is a standard rubber seal and will not improve with use, like a felt or leather seal might. in other words, it is what it is.
if it improved, could it be from the fan pulley?

Re: Always something...
I changed the oil and filter tonight and let it run for 5 minutes. It started leaking again. I ordered a new seal a couple days ago from TM. I will just wait for it and change it. Hopefully it will be a smooth repair.

Re: Always something...
Jason,
Did you also get the speedy sleeve for your pulley - just in case????
Make sure you chock the axle to the steering gear housing before you split the front off.
Can't remember if this was coming off or going back on;
Peter

that would have been coming off. Looks like my shirt and shoes, but don't remember ever using that puller, so it is not me.

No, I just ordered the seal. It came yesterday. I wasn't sure what the sleeve was for. I could order it once it is apart if I need to. Any advice on how to know if I need the sleeve?I probably won't get to it until next week though. My dad is coming to help me swap the motor in my '71 C-10 this weekend, so I doubt I will have any time to work on the cub.
