C2 Mower assistance

Postby kellyman » Sat Apr 05, 2014 5:42 pm

First post here. My dad and I have spent the last few months fixing up a '53 Cub and finally attached the belly mower to try out everything. There is a metal "cap" on top of the main mower pulley that is held on by a bolt and lock washer that screws into the top of the spindle shaft. After a few minutes of mower use, the bolt holding the cap begins to back out and unscrew, and the pulley becomes loose.
We've view the parts diagram and really can't make out much. It looks like maybe part # 474034R91. I've included an image of the cap unscrewed which shows it's underside. Is it possible we are missing some parts that go beneath the cap? Any insight would be appreciated.

No experience with the C2 mower.

Same problem with a 3260 mower deck. Change the lock washer. If that doesn't help, thread locker should solved the problem. Thread locker solved the same problem on a drill press's quill.

Also check the condition of the key, the one that fits in the shaft and pulley key ways.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks...we've already tried a new lock washer and the same thing happens. I think its happening when the mower goes into" rachet" mode. I may just try to order the part and see if we have something missing. The part number describes a cap with pins and springs. It's frustrating to this Cub back to life and get stopped by this.

I have never touched a C-2 spindle, so I don't know how it is supposed to go together.

Is that a setscrew in the cap? If so, back it out, install the cap, tighten the cap screw, THEN tighten the setscrew.

The cap should have a roll pin (sometimes referred to as a tension or spring pin) extending through the cap and into the empty shaft key way. Yeah, I know a round pin in a square hole! This prevents the cap from spinning and loosening the cap bolt.

Thanks Ron, that helps a lot! We just thought maybe it was a hole for a broken off grease fitting. Now if we can just figure out how to fix another one, or get the part.

You should be able to drive the roll pin out with a punch if it's broken or worn off too short to engage the keyway. Take the piece to any hardware store and you should be able to find a replacement. The new roll pin may have to be cut to length.

Thanks to all! Got the old pin punched out and on the way to the hardward store to find a pin. Should be mowing grass soon!
