Governor saga continues

Postby Posco » Sun Apr 20, 2014 2:19 pm

I've taken the governor and the distributor/mag off the tractor in an attempt to clean everything up and put it back together, either by myself or with some help. Notice the condition of the impulse coupling. There was a lot of grit and grime throughout and I've cleaned most of it up. I have a new ignition/mag oil seal but I understand from reading here that they are a bear to remove without the proper tool/s.

Am I safe to remove the nut on the end of the impulse coupling to further clean underneath or should I spray it with Break Clean and leave well enough alone? How about buffing off the corrosion?

removing the seal is not a problem. Just get it out any way you can. BUT!!take note as to the seals position before it is removed. The new seal can be difficut to install. as far as the implus coupling nut. Unless you know the impules is not working I would leave it alone. there springs inside that can come apart. If the implus is tripping I would just oil it and let it be..

Thanks for your response, Clark. The coupling was tripping but I was surprised at the amount of grime I took out of it. I took baby swabs and ran them around and around until they finally started coming out clean. It took quite a few.

I work for Louisiana-Pacific and we press 23/32 board, among other thicknesses, so making a 'press' to pull the old one out and pull the new one into place should be relatively easy. A jigsaw, threaded rod, nuts and washers and I should be in business pretty quick.

I think I'm inching closer to success. Baby steps. I'm looking over my governor and I can't find a timing mark on the teeth. Is it a punch mark directly on the end of a tooth or am I looking for it in the wrong place?

The impulse coupling requires a special puller to remove, once you take that nut off. So unless you can get your hands on the puller, better leave well enough alone. If you spray with brake cleaner, then you need to try and oil it somehow, or you may set up a wear condition.

The timing marks on mine were small punch dots, and they were at the tip of a tooth on one of the gears, and in the valley between two teeth on the other. You can see them from the operator side, so governor installed first, then magneto. Since the gear is helical, you have to start a clock position of two away. So it usually takes more than one try. I marked the appropriate teeth with a paint pen on both sides to help make it easier to get started in the right place.

As I said in my PM, there usually is a punched line also on the housing on the mag side that will show where the slots in the governor mag drive should line up. It is a rough timing, but the slots should be at about 2:00 and 8:00 in relation to the rear of the governor housing...

Bob, Rick, Mike and Clark...thank you all for your help, I will conquer this. I work 7:00 to 7:00 and just got home after making a diversionary trip to the pharmacy to pick up a magnifying glass so I can see those punch marks. I'm almost there if I can see those marks. I've come a lot further mechanicing than I ever intended but I gather it's part and parcel of being a Cub owner.

I will, Mike, and thank you! I did find a dimple on the governor that I'm taking to be a timing mark and after viewing a very clear pic of timing marks on the idler gear, I now know where to look for that/those.

I can almost hear the sound of my Cub running again, I'm that close.

I have a small victory to report. Another twelve hour day at work and in spite of the rain and being anxious to get the Cub going, I went out with my flashlight and magnifying glass and I found the timing marks on the idler gear. I found the single punch mark on the governor last night so Friday I'll take a stab at meshing them back together.

Thank you all for your help, much appreciated!

Here's where I'm/we're at. I found the timing marks on the governor and the idler gear. Removed old mag/ignition oil seal and replaced with new one...used Indian Head sealant and it was a bear. Mild profanity as per allowance.

Engine at TDC. Marked the teeth on both the idler gear and the governor and got it in place with little trouble. Followed Mike's excellent tutorial on static timing and tried to fire it up. Backfires and won't start. Suggestions?
