I agree with Bill on the cables. Most of today's jumper cables, even the supposed heavy duty ones, are a joke and will not handle 6v very well. Your permanent cables should work a lot better. Anyway, it sounds like it started very well!

The problem WAS with the jumper cables. I connected the 6 volt battery to the starter using the permanent cables and it turned over almost as fast as using the 12 volt battery. Thanks for the advice. Now I can move on to finishing everything else. The engine still runs rough unless I use almost full choke at both low idle and high speed. I can work on that when I get all of the controls connected.

Quite possibly the metering jet needs cleaned. Remove it from the carb and run a thin copper wire through it and blow it out with some carb cleaner.

I checked the metering jet and it is open. In fact it is new. At the DSCF I had 2 carbs rebuilt and one included a new metering jet. When I first started the cub it ran fairly well but with a lot of choke. That carb started leaking at the gasket between the top and bottom and I installed the other carb that was reworked at DSCF and I have the same problem. At both high and low engine speeds almost full choke is required and a very tiny movement of the choke, either way will cause very rough running or it even stops. After about 5 minutes I shut it down and noticed that there was some gas around the top flange of the carb between the carb and manifold. Don't know if running it at full choke caused this or there is another problem. Since it did almost the same with 2 different recently reworked carbs. Is there something else maybe not carb related that I need to be checking?

If it is leaking around the manifold/carb neck, you may be letting in too much air causing it to run lean.

From the looks of those cables (it is hard to tell), but I think you could go with a even bigger size and it would turn over even better. Get some as Barnyard Suggested. We have even used Welding Cable Lead before for battery cables. With a 6 volt system, they like the biggest cables you can get.
