48 cub

Postby nic » Tue May 27, 2014 2:58 pm

Hello,
I traded last fall for a 48 Cub that had been restored mechanically and repainted. The owner had done a very nice job and I am pleased with it over all. ( I would included a picture but do not know how). The transmission, however, emits a whiny screech when it is in gear and moving. I assume it is a bad bearing. I wonder how much of a job it would be to tear the thing apart and replace the bad bearing if that is what is causing it. I did see the post on noisy transmissions, and am going to try flushing with kerosene to see if that quiets it. If anyone can offer insight into this problem I would appreciate it. The cub also has a very ugly brazed right final drive but seems adequate since I will only sickle mow with the machine. It is not going to be earning its keep. Like me, it is retired! Other than these two issues, the Cub is beautiful. Thanks for any input.
Nick

Most Cub transmissions are noisy. If you are a good mechanic, familiar with gears and bearings, nothing to it with a little help. Of course, I'm not much of a mechanic so I would have to enlist my cousin or nephews to assist. Some folks never get the whine out, but it is always a good thing to change the fluid and make sure the return holes in top of the transmission on each end are open and not stopped up. Good luck and have fun.

They are straight cut gears, so a whine is normal a screech is not. Does it only do it when moving in gear, or also in neutral? What about rolling in neutral?
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Thanks for the response. If it ever dries out up here, I will take it out for a spin and try running in the three gears, reverse, rolling in neutral, pto running, etc. so that I can offer more information. I will also flush thoroughly and see if that makes a difference. I am familiar with normal gear noise from cubs, but this is quite different.
