So while mowing today my fan started to rattle on the shroud. Well within a short time it got bad. It was hitting the shroud hard enough to spark and when I emergency shut off the cub the belt was smoking and the fan snagged on the shroud.
I tried to tighten the rear (engine side) nut down but I couldn't get a good grip on it. I also tried to hold it with the nut in the middle but no dice. Is there a trick to this? I even tried to get off the air cleaner assembly for more room but I didn't even have room for that! It doesn't help I have very large hands but still this is rediculous. I spent 2 hours trying and I think I got 1/2 of a turn.
So what is your trick? Or is there a tutorial out there I couldn't find?

To tighten the fan hold the nut on the engine side and turn the nut behind the fan or you might break the casting the fan is bolted to.

What size wrenches? And how do you even get them in place?

If memory serve me correct, 13/16" is the magic number. DO NOT turn the nut on the engine side. If you successfully turn the nut on the engine side BAD THINGS HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED. You turn the shaft on the flats that are machined on the shaft.

And the flats on the shaft are located between the fan and the radiator or the nut looking piece about 2" forward.

Some wrenches may be too thick to fit in the narrow opening to the flats. Check and be sure that your wrench is not too thick. That might be your problem.

I had to grind down a wrench to make it fit but I have. Only issue is that the whole thing won't tighten down. Do they tighten down or is something more serious going on.

I would check the bearing, it sounds like the shaft is tight and you still have a loose fan. Check the shaft to see if it moves with the fan itself.

Could the threading be stripped between the two? Everything seems in working order except it won't tighten down.

So it looks like a bad bearing. Now the hard part. How do I replace that bearing? Remove the shaft after taking out the radiator?

Radiator won't have to come out, but the shroud probably will.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.
