Rear Tires 9.5x24
I'm considering these for Rex '48. My question is are they too big? The alternate is this 8.3 x 24. What's your preference for rear tires?
Note: Has much as I hate it - Rex '48 will have to earn his keep once I finally finish. So I need the best tires for working as in cultivating, plowing, harrowing, etc.
As always thanks for your help.

Those will work but what you plan to use it for, 8.3's will do fine.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Rear Tires 9.5x24
I would base my choice on price, not tire size.
Tires will probably rot out before wearing out.

Bill - your response begs for the question - what would you use the 9.5's for? Is it more for Fast Hitch Implements that add weight to the rear-end?

Ken,
We can slice and dice your question, "What's your preference for rear tires?" in numerous ways. I'm basing my answer on your statements above with no thoughts of period authenticity. You gave up on that with a stainless steel muffler.
For my money on a working Cub you can't beat 23 degree tread tires for traction. For a working Cub, traction is the name of the game. 8.3 or 9.5, your choice. My personal observations, for looks 9.5, for pulling 8.3.
Having said all that, it is sorta like which oil do I use.

Bill. for you - well no - not just for you - I will have a stock period authentic IH Muffler for Rex.
I swear this post is getting as challenging as a post on paint . Here's another take on it. What was the STOCK Tire Size "period authenticity to match the period authentic muffler" in 1948 - as in what did most unit leave the factory with?

I have some 9.5's that I use but only because they came on a tractor. I also have one set only because they cost me $130.00 for the pair, but I don't use them a lot. If I were to buy new tires I would go with 8.3, but like Eugene said, cost makes a difference.

If you are working with row crops the wider tires will take up more space and add width to the compacted area between rows, so I also vote for the narrower ones......

Re: Rear Tires 9.5x24
Actually, the older Cubs such as your's didn't even have the option of 9.5 tires. I believe 8.3 tires were the largest they offered at the time. I wouldn't spend the extra money for 9.5s, as there is absolutely nothing gained in the field. The 9.5s were a little nicer for lawn mowing, as they do spread out the weight a bit more and cause less tracking in a lawn. The 8.3s would be my choice.

Wider tires spread the weight over a wider area, thus reducing compaction.
I use both sizes. Your cub would have come with 7. (something) or 8's originally.

I like the 9.5s and use them on my most worked cub.It also has 5.00 15s on the front , much better for cultivating.

Re: Rear Tires 9.5x24
I would definitely go with the 8.3 tire. My concern about the 9.5 tire would be the increase in speed. If I could change one thing about my Cubs, it would be a lower first gear.

Re: Rear Tires 9.5x24
What do ya'll need such big tires for? My early circle cub only has, what I believe are the original, 7-24 on a 5" rim. I don't know but the old 7-24 might be a modern 6.?-24 The narrow rims make it look like dinky tires.

Re: Rear Tires 9.5x24
One of my Cubs has 11.2x24 rear tires. They work ok but are too big for the tractor. However, this is what the Cub had on it when I bought it, and they were almost new, so being cheap, I kept them. The other two Cubs have 8.3x24 tires and I like that size a lot better. They give a reasonable ground speed, as opposed to the larger tires, which are too fast even at low RPM. Just my 2¢ worth.
