Like others have said 9.5's look awesome but 8.3's will give slower ground speed for cultivating. Our first cub had 8.3's and present cub has 9.5's. Seems its either too fast or too slow ( governor problems ).

I went up to the farm today and took a look at Princess '55 - I was able to access the tires on her.

Princess '55 has 8.3x24's on her. I looked at the clearance with the fenders because we have to use winter chains quite often. The 8.3's on Princess clear chains perfectly - but when I was a kid sometimes they would hit - if they got a tad too lose.

All of you have given awesome feedback as usual. I've not made a final decisions yet - but am leaning towards the 8.3's. I do have to admit that price is a little bit of a factor. And in the words of one our esteemed members they are "period authentic" :D :D :D

Now THAT'S a big pair of tires. Maybe a little overkill. PO must have had a sense of humor.

Just to confuzzle the situation a bit, remember that there have been two different tire sizing systems used on tractor tires over the years.

I call them the "dash system" and the "X system." In the dash system tires are measured straight across, perpendicular to their centerline. In the X system, the tires are measured from the tip of one lug to the tip of the next lug on the opposite side, kinda diagonally.

Original Cub tires were actually 6-24, with 7-24 being optional, possibly 8-24. Note the dashes. Dash system.
Current sizes would be 7.2x24, 8.3x24, and 9.5x24. Same size physically as the dash tires above, respectively.

Of course, it won't be long before we'll be debating over putting 215/80D24 vs 245/80D24 on our Cubs, because more and more tractor tires these days are using the "P-metric" system of tire measurement.

I've never heard them being measured either style the way you describe. Not saying it's wrong just never heard it described that way. This page from Miller Tire explains what I always thought was the difference. For what they call the second version (column II) by the tread width, and for the third version (column III) by the widest part of the cross section. http://www.millertire.com/faqs/
I do agree about the metric ones. Of course the discussion will be; how do I afford a pair, more than which size.

Hmm, that was how it had been explained to me over the years. Miller's FAQ does seem much more plausible. It never made sense because all you had to do was place the lugs a little farther apart, and you had a bigger tire.

Ya learn something new every day.
