Generator pulley nut.

Postby mbarcus » Sat Jun 28, 2014 2:07 pm

I damaged the nut that holds the pulley onto the generator while disassembling the generator for rebuild. I have the generator reassembled with new brushes, bearings and armature. I don't want to damage the new armature threads with a bad nut.
It is right hand thread but an odd thread, 21/32-20 (.656-20) I believe.
Anyone know where I can purchase one?

Try the local shop that rebuilds starters and generators.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I just went and checked one, it's 5/8-18. McMaster-Carr doesn't show anything close. Might try JP's (Forum sponsor with link at the bottom of the page) and see if they'd have an extra. And welcome to the Forum.

Mine is not 5/8-18. I bought one of those assuming it would fit. Too small. Measured the armature thread diameter. Was .658 inches. Saw on some car forum, someone said it was .665-20 thread. Assume they meant .656-20 (.656=21/32).

Assume 6v? It looks like it's available from a dealer, IH #1915172 $1.92

If you don't make out with the IH dealer try contacting Classic Generators. I found them very helpful when working on Rex '48.

Went to the local auto electric repair place and got a used one for a dollar. Told him it was an odd size. He just grunted and dug around and pulled one out. Verified it had good threads on an alternator and said it's not odd here.
Thanks for your help.

A quick thinker would have dug around more once you told him it was an odd size and charged you TWO dollars!

Now you've both got good stories to tell though. His is how some guy came in telling him how odd ball that nut was and he just reached over an handed one to him. I think there will be some chuckles at the coffee shop in the morning.

Sounds like a good place to keep in mind when you need anything else generator or starter related though.
