New Cub Owner Inquiry
I recently acquired an IH McCormick Farmall Cub that appears to have been restored. The serial number indicates that it is a 1954 model (181898 J). I am a little confused about the grill as It appears to be from a later model based on the limited investigation I have been able to do on the internet. The grill is slotted with ten openings. There are two at the top, ten another row of six, then two more at the bottom. The descriptions I have found say that the grill is simply a wire mesh for that year. There is also an IH emblem on the hood which according to some sites I visited was not on the 1954 model.
Anyone have more insight on this?
I would post a picture (it looks very nice) but I don't know how to do that yet.

Don, welcome to the forum. The grill and emblems were changed later in 1954 at serial #185000. Do you have a decal or emblems on the side of the hood?. Quite possibly the original grill/hood had been damaged and replaced with the later versions as that is what the dealer would have.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: New Cub Owner Inquiry
Welcome to the board!
Your tractor's SN of 181898 indicates it rolled off the line in Oct of 1954. The change to the 11 bar grille happened in Nov of 1954.
There are several other clues as to if your tractor's sheet metal has been replaced or if it was actually made the way it currently is. At the same time the sheet metal changed, the fast hitch became available. If your tractor has a fast hitch, or is equipped to accept one, the SN change within the parts books may be off a few numbers. Click the link in my signature line to get more information about the production run and see how your SN lines up with others of the same era.
If you could email me a couple pics of the tractor, I'll post them for you, or check out this link to learn how you can post them on your own.

No "fast hitch" on it. Draw bar with a 2" ball offset to the left.
I didn't see an email address to send you pics. I looked at the link directions to upload pics, but I am still trying to learn how to drive the tractor let alone upload electronic images.

Re: New Cub Owner Inquiry
There is no provision that I can make out for the Fast Hitch. The only way to know for sure is to look at all the cast codes along with the engine SN to see if you have a newer tractor with a older bolster and SN, or a tractor that was piecemealed together, or if all the numbers line up and the parts manual is incorrect.
Look here for the locations of the casting codes and the location of the engine SN and let us know what you find out.

Don, Nice looking Cub. I personally like that grill better than the screen or 4-bar versions. Welcome to the Forum.

Don,
Welcome to the forum!!! Enjoy the ride and that nice looking Cub. Give me the 11-bar grill any time, my favorite. Got a question about your Cub. Has the drawbar been welded together? Sure appears that something was done in the middle of the drawbar.
Bill

Looks like it broke at the center hole and just welded back together, closing the hole.

Re: New Cub Owner Inquiry
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I will take a look at the drawbar but the picture sure looks like it was welded.
I am slowly being drawn in to becoming a CUB fanatic. Your posts are contributing to that.
I also like the look of the 11 bar grill as opposed to the screen. However, my thoughts as a newbie are that the CUB should be presented as it would be for the time period and manufacture specifics. I get a little OCD about things like that and assume that others feel the same. It may not be important at all. I just don't know and I am fastenated by the process of investigating the history and finding these things out.
I don't need another obssession, but it looks like I might be on my way to exactly that.... again. It will be fun!

Is the place to attach the helper spring the only change that was added in late 1954 to provide for the fast hitch?

Re: New Cub Owner Inquiry
The 11-bar grille is correct for that hood and those emblems.
The mesh screen grille matches the "ribbed" hood with decals.
Take a closer look at that serial number. The 181XXX might be 187XXX, which would make it a 1955.
Another possibility is that the hood and grille was replaced at some point with the newer version.
