after a thorough degrease and a power wash I decided to finish with filling and changing the remaining fluids. I read the service manual regarding how to fill the fan hub. simple enough it seems. Specifications called for 1/3 pint sae-80 lube. Carefully measured out the correct amount, brought the filler screw to the horizontal position filled it up rotated the hole to the bottom to drain excess lube. It seems however all of what I added came back out. clean and new looking just like I put in. That can't be right! So out comes the filler plug back to horizontal fill it up again rotate the hole to the bottom let some drain out but not all. Put the screw back in, good to go. Wrong! It turned out it was the fastest way to make a mess of a completely degreased cub. Lube seemed like it was coming from everywhere. Stopped, another quick power wash. Filled the hub according to the manual hub is no longer noisy. and no leaks. All that's left are the finals gaskets came today. Greg

I thought the fan hub gets 30wt not 80wt. I will have to go look it up.

It says engine .

Yes, it should take 30 weight oil.

What you saw coming out is the excess oil. That is how it is suppose to work. There is an internal stand pipe that will not let the rest of the oil out.

Its an old copy of a service manual I could have sworn it called for SAE-80. Any harm done? I did also read about the stand pipe it just seemed like to much drained out. lesson learned.

seems I confused the fan hub with Belt pulley housing. oops, any harm done?

If the fan had oil in it before, the same amount will come out that you put in. There is always a temptation not to let all the oil drain out when turning the hole downward. If you do, the excess will leak out the shaft end and all over the front of the engine. :cry:

Hi,
To drain the oil out of a fan hub, I think you would need to take the fan and hub assembly off the engine, and stand it on end, with the end with the nut down, then the oil will run out the rear of the unit, around the shaft. I think there is no seal there, someone was saying that lately on here. :)

To change/clean fan hub without sealed bearings you will need to remove hub. Disassemble clean and reinstall, then fill with appropriate oil. Turn bolt on front NOT nut on back in fork! Also be sure to orient the scupper inside so it will distribute the oil! Don't ask how I know this.

After reading this post I thought Uh Oh , I did not check the hub lubrication while I had the hood/gastank off to clean the tank. My Cub is a 53 and has been siting for a Long time. I went back and wire brushed off the hub and could see the screw/fill plug. Judging from the crud on it I had great doubts about what I would find when I took it out. To my total surprise there was still oil in it and it was not all nasty looking. I only had to add in a few squirts to top it up. Amazing .
That said it is sort of a contraption .

Alan, if any ran out when you removed the screw it was over full. Whenever you add oil you should turn the fan to point the screw down to let out the excess ot you will sling it everywhere.
