Rim color update

Some one answered my first ? About rim color the cub iam talking about now is a 1949 the guy iam painting the tractor for said they have always been white wanting to make sure that is right before I paint them Also I had a 1952 cub sold it thanks

The following is from TM Tractor Parts website:

Farmall Cub Tractors - 1947 s/n 501 to 1954 s/n 185000
The following items were RED: tractor, hood and wire grille, front wheels and rear wheel discs, wheel weights(3)

The following item was galvanized or some similar silver-looking finish: rear wheel rim

The plain seat fabric could have been black or silver canvas with a drain hole grommet. The two-tone color plain seat, red and white fabric, was not used.

Hood decal for the first production Cub tractors read "McCORMICK - DEERING FARMALL" and the radiator grille sides included the model symbol "circle Cub decal", from the beginning of production, May 1947(5), until July 28, 1947(1). After this brief run, the circle Cub decal was eliminated and "Cub" was added to the hood decal to read "McCORMICK - DEERING FARMALL CUB"

Hood decal from July 28, 1947 until September 12, 1949(1) read "McCORMICK - DEERING FARMALL CUB". There was no decal on the radiator grille side.

Hood decal from September 12, 1949 to May 12, 1954(1) read "McCORMICK - FARMALL CUB". There was no decal on the radiator grille side.

Demonstrator Cubs in 1950 only, were paint color "White Cap White"(6). Although the tractor was painted white, there were some red parts. "The exact serial numbers of the demonstrator tractors is not known, but it is believed to include serial numbers 99536-106511" (6). They were believed to have been produced in the first three (3) months of 1950.

This is what a 1949 Cub would look like originally, with the exception of the Red/White seat cover, and depending on the SN, the hood decal might be different.
Everything is Red, except for the rear rims, which should be a galvanized silver color as they are in this photo.

But if the guy you are painting the tractor for wants certain things painted white, its his Cub and he can paint them any color he wants.
But if he wants it to look original, it should be painted like the above tractor.

carburetors and magnetos weren't painted were they? I don't like the look of painted radiator hoses either.

Legend has it that the tractor was assembled with everything except for tires, and painted. That means the magneto, carburetor, hoses, etc. all got doused in lots of red paint.

Lots of people like the accents of fresh black hoses, a bare metal carburetor, etc.. However it is technically not "correct" if that is what you're going for.

huh. It certainly makes sense from a manufacturing stand point to spray the whole thing, but I assumed they didn't spray magnetos because I see them so often with no paint on them, not even flecks. Interesting...

Has anyone ever seen a "bare naked" backside of a hose? You know...... Without any paint.

Or a carb?

Carbs, hoses etc. were painted red at the factory. Back sides of hoses and a few other things often got poor coverage. There is usually the ghost of a black "X" on the back side of the radiator where the fan prevented complete coverage. There are many places on the tractor where a restoration easily shows as "over-restoration".

Magnetos were masked so they would not be painted, but may have gotten some overspray from a poorly/quickly done masking job.

My 64 Cub has more Yellow primer than paint, seems like IH just primed them put em together then sprayed!
lil feller will get a clean paint job in a few years

I think you have an originally yellow tractor that has been repainted red (mostly). The areas that are yellow "primer" are where the red wouldn't get to doing a quick repaint with the hood on. I have a 63 round nose Loboy that would have been originally yellow and was repainted red. It has yellow showing in the same places without the hood.

Not sure when they started priming Cub castings, but that's what you see on your 64, yellow primer.

I notice that the rims I painted with rustoleum aluminum almost 10 years ago is rusting (it's kept inside). Last set of rims I painted I use the CNH IronGard silver or glavanized?? (code 111?) It's nice paint and looks close to the original galvanize coating.
