Water in transmission

Postby JackieG » Sat Jul 19, 2014 5:58 pm

I purchased a cub in the spring, changed oil in the transmission and now just changed it again and noticed the oil is tan in color.
We have gotten an unusual amount of rain lately and it must be getting into the tranny somewhere.
I think the culprit is the gear shift shaft where rain may run down behind the coiled spring on the shaft.
Anyone else got the same problem?

That is a common problem.

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of Cub info here.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Yup. Common problem.

Either store the tractor in a shed or under a shelter. Other alternative is to tarp the top of the transmission.

Even stored indoor the transmission will accumulate moisture from condensation. So, every spring I drain the transmission and change the lub.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks!
I feel much better.
I love this little tractor.
It makes short work of gardening with the cultivators and disc hillers.

Check the gasket under the cover/around the shifter. A bad gasket will easily contribute to more than usual water getting into the transmission. One thing I like to do with my Super A is apply some hydrophobic grease (virtually all are hydrophobic) around the seams most prone to getting much/standing water in. Helps keep the water out aswell.

If you can't shelter it and just want a simple and fast solution...you can upturn a large 2? (5?) gallon pail over it.

I had that same problem. Steve B & others suggested that I take the shifter components on the top side off & put an O ring on the shaft to try to keep the water out of the tranny. I did what they suggested no water. Others may have pictures I do not.
