Not getting fuel?

Postby FullMoonFarm » Tue Jul 22, 2014 9:59 am

Greetings folks,

I made the mistake of leaving the Cub sit out all winter, and am paying for it now. When I went to get her going I realized that the carb was full of water, and the top warped. I proceeded to make up the straightening jig, and got the top taken care of only to break the idle tube. I got that fixed, and made a new gasket and reinstalled and had one of the inlets strip out, so it was off to NAPA for a heli-coil kit. Fixed that, and now when I try to start it, it appears that I'm not getting fuel to the cylinders.
I pulled and cleaned the plugs, but noticed that there is a bit of brown residue on them after I crank her over, and no wetness from fuel. Lots of fuel pours out of the air intake side of the carb after cranking.

I have spark, and cleaned all the wire contacts. Rotor and points are fairly new and clean.

Anybody have any ideas on what I should do next? Could the intake manifold be clogged?

Thanks,

Scott

Compression check or remove the valve cover. Looking for stuck valve(s).

Clean the air cleaner.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Have you verified that you are getting spark to the plugs and at the right time?

Thanks for the replies. I did have spark at the plugs. Looked a little weak, but I really didn't have a reference. I haven't checked the timing at all since I changed the cap and rotor a while back.

I'll definitely do a compression test tomorrow and check the valves as well.

Thanks again,

Scott

So I pull all the plugs this AM and the valve cover to make sure everything is turning, and no she won't turn over. The starter is just bumping but not turning her. I stuck the hand crank in (after making a new pin) and she is tight enough that I'm afraid to pull really hard. I replaced the battery a month ago and she cranked fine. Even the other day she was cranking. Now nothing. Could I be locked up somehow?

Edit: I pulled the starter and the bendix was free, and proceeded to have at her with the hand crank. She turns and from what I can see all the valves are moving. Hooked the starter to the battery charger and she turns, albeit slow. I did notice that the aftermarket battery cables are 4 gauge and probably should be upgraded to 2 gauge. They were really hot when I was trying to start her.

So now I guess I am back to figuring why the fuel isn't making it to the cylinders?

Will it fire on ether? If so, continue along the fuel path.

If not, compression test. A valve stuck in the up position shows up as very low compression on that cylinder.

If she sat all winter without being used, and now feels tight, I would pull the cover off the oil filter and make sure you have not lost prime to the oil pump. There's a hole near the top on the block side of the filter housing that should squirt oil out while cranking.

If the cables feel hot then there is another problem. If your tractor is 6v, then 4 guage is too small, You may have a bad connection, also.

She's not firing on the ether. I did get a little bit of a sputter on straight gas when I tried it this time. After that, nothing. Pulled two of the plug and they were both dry. Checked the spark on one of them, and it was there. From what I could see it was bluish.

I tried to do a compression test and it appears my tester isn't working anymore. Going to check the oil filter next.

Yes she is 6v.

Oil pump lost prime. I re-primed it. She is cranking over pretty good now. Should I drop a little oil in each spark plug hole? Wondering if I should get new plugs as well?

Might help. I had a problem where the plugs seemed to have good spark, but a no start condition. Changing the plugs cured it.

However, I would check the timing first to rule that out.

Still no luck. New UD-16 plugs gapped to .023. Points gapped to .020. Timing checked and valve cover removed and all valves observed moving up and down. The only thing I didn't do was run to town for a new compression tester, but with my finger over each hole there definitely was compression (maybe not enough?) Guess I'll run to town now and buy one.

Any body else have any thoughts?

Picked up a new Sears compression testing kit today, and checked them out and it was not too good: #1 had 35psi , #2 had 25, #3-35, and #4 had 40.

Did I mess it up with all that cranking on a dry engine?

Prime the oil pump. Put two table spoons of oil on top of each piston. Do not install spark plugs.

Crank over engine until you have oil being pumped into the oil filter housing.

Now, replace the spark plugs and try to start engine.

Wow did I get oil everywhere :-) Some even came out of the intake manifold down into the carb. I guess the #2 intake valve was open. . . Going to let her sit a bit before I put the new plugs back in.

Well, I'm back at it. Cleaned everything up. Put the new plugs back in and cranked her a bit and she sputters some, but doesn't start. When I give her a shot of ether through the carb she'll backfire.

When I release the choke I get a lot of dirty gas flowing out of the intake side of the carb. Is that normal?
