rebuilt C60 on craigslist, should i buy?

Postby ad356 » Thu Jul 24, 2014 10:27 pm

well there is a local listing for a C60 engine with a zenith carb that was apparently rebuilt with fairly few hours on the rebuild for $400 or best offer. i don't need an engine now but it has me thinking maybe i should buy it and put away for future use. im not sure of the full cost of rebuilding a cub engine but i know its allot more then $400. the guy said he pulled the engine because he installed a kubota engine on his tractor. frankly i dont know why you would do that, that C60 is just a little sweetheart of an engine, i love mine.

I would find out what was done in the rebuild and what parts were replaced. He can't have done a whole lot for $400 unless the engine needed minimal machining to get it back to specs or he had the equipment to do it himself. That being said, that's a bargain price if it's a decent engine.

ad says it was in the tractor when he bought it and that he did not personally go through the expense of overhauling it himself

Ran when parked
Just needs a carb kit/battery/tuneup
Only needs clutch/brakes adjusted

I would be interested but not at that price unless I knew a lot more about the engine.

I don't believe everything I read in a Craigslist ad.
If all those parts are there then it is a little more attractive.
You are still taking the word of someone you don't know on it's condition.

but on the other hand since my cub is a 6v system the starter and generator wouldnt be of much use to me.... of course if i looked at it, i would want to hear it run, look at the condition of the block, the pain should still look good if its low in hours its not going to be a gooey mess leaking oil, ect.

I saw that also…I'm in the process of rebuilding one now so my bankroll decided not to pursue it…But it sounds like a decent deal, but I'd be prepared to rebuild it beforehand and if it didn't need it , it'd be a bonus…Theres also a Cub on there for 500.00 with the engine, but the guy didn't answer my inquiry….Probably a good thing…. …..

If that engine you're eyeballing is in the tall block configuration, it wouldn't take much to try to run it on the bench. Battery, gravity feed gasoline rig up, garden hose to run a little water through the block open loop. If it runs, it's a real bargain. Otherwise it's still not a bad price for a good C-60 that needs some work to get it running. Check the lower right corner of the block to be sure that ear is not cracked. I had to weld that part back onto the block of my 1948 Cub engine.

Good luck.

what is the tall block configuration? that's still the same thing that's in a standard cub? what about that zenith carb it comes with? can i simply install that on my cub's current engine and gain a couple of hp?? if i have a zenith and i am not paying for it, might as well???

Hi there,

If someone else doesn't buy that engine I would appreciate info on where it is located. I just tore into my first cub that I bought with a home in Maine and unfortunately the engine is frozen solid due to the exhaust not being covered I believe. I have a bunch into the tractor at this point and really don't want to (can't afford) to have this one machined and rebuilt.

Thanks,
Keith in Maine.
