Red bullet light

Postby smars4444 » Thu Jul 31, 2014 5:26 am

I have a small red bullet light on my Cub for a rear light.., to the left of fire extinguisher. Does anyone know if this was an option back in 1956 or is it an add on? it's a 6 volt system and the light is in very good condition and still works.

thank you

I'll apologize up front for taking a guess, but since your Cub is a Lo-Boy, it appears the fast hitch prevents a full-sized rear light from being attached to the battery box. Hence, the smaller bullet light.

Hopefully, someone else who has the same setup will comment and answer your question.

Looks like a later replacement. Look at the wiring and connections. That should tell you whether it's factory or an owner replacement/add-on.

Allis Chalmers had lights like that, in the 60's.

Yes, IH had a red bullet light for the rear. Can't tell from the picture if that is one though, looks a little big. From Rudi's manuals....

It would be a nice layout, as in the Scrivet referenced exploded drawing of the dual rear lights, to have the small light mounted atop a larger rear light. Especially if that little bullet light was hooked up to a flasher. If all that would fit on the lo-boy? And, I'd be inclined to consider such a set up for my regular Farmall Cub if these little bullet lights were available at large. Steiner sells the larger light which mounts on the battery box.

The short answer is no, it was not an original light on your tractor. I can't see it well enough in your picture to tell if is something IH supplied at some time or not.

The red bullet light Scrivet showed was only used as an option for a short while, a year or two around 1951 or so. I think I have more specifics on that, posted some time in the past, but not going looking for it right now. In 1956, the usual rear light was a combination light with a sealed beam white work light. The reflector of the sealed beam had a non-silvered circle that was coated on the back side with red. A small bulb was inside the light housing behind the sealed beam. When it was on, it showed red through the lens of the sealed beam unit.

There was an alternate red-only rear light available. It looked about like any common tail light that you might have found on a trailer or similar installation back then.

For the lo-Boy, there was a small flat bracket that bolted to the battery box to move the light bracket out from behind the Fast-Hitch rockshaft.

You could make one.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

That's not bad, Barnyard...and Hengy who worked it up. Was the original red bullet light on that cocked angle atop the rear light, or was it level with the rear light? I suppose some kind of a sloped "something" could level the bullet light. Full up with summer projects now, but that looks like an easy one to eventually do. Would have to look into a flasher to see if it would fit inside the rear light housing.

I bet the larger lamp was angled down to see whatever implement you were working with while the red lamp was level and straight.

Thank you everyone! Maybe next spring I'll swap it out for a worklight.
