decals

Postby ad356 » Wed Aug 06, 2014 8:31 pm

im going on staycation the first week of septemeber and the tractor is on the list of things that i have to work on. im going to remove the hood, paint and apply new decals. the hood sheetmetal is in great shape for being 66 years old but the paint is pretty bad and the metal is bare in some places. im should already have paint, im going to buy decals, DA sand and paint. who has the best prices on "McCormick-deering Farmall cub" decals, its a 1948 so i believe its the second style of decals. also if need more paint where do i buy a decent paint for a good price. my local dealer has paint but their prices are probably on the high side. i used to use valspar farmall red, which i like but tractor supply no longer carries it, and the majic they replace it..... well to be polite let me just say i dont like it and will never buy it again. they need to go back to the valspar line, it was much better. i was pissed when they dropped that line, it was every bit as good as IH irongaurd but the price was better.

My favorite off the shelf paint is Ace Hardware tractor/implement paint. Their rattle cans are hands down the best I've used. Only problem is there are good Ace dealers and some that don't stock much. If you have one nearby, give them a try

i opt not to use rattle cans, they arent exactly a cheap way to go.... well if you dont own a good compressor or HVLP gun they are, but i have both. i have a 60 gallon air compressor and a harbor freight HVLP gun. an HVLP gun paints faster, has more control, and i think puts down a thicker coat of paint. there are reasons why a reputable auto body shop would never paint with a rattle can.

that being said i have an ace dealer not far from me. do ace hardware stores sell this paint in quarts? that's the route i would take, i dont exactly need a gallon. i can paint a large object like my belly mower a quart of paint with my HVLP and still have allot left over. this would take several cans, and rattle cans arent exactly cheap anymore.

so who is the best supplier for price/quality on decals? im looking at farmallparts.com and farmall cubs forever, price im getting is $35. seems like the decal sets come with some decals that cubs dont need, like a shift pattern decal that has 1-5 forward speed and one reverse. why is that?

Farm & Fleet carries Valspar implement paint - I use Wal-Mart self etching primer as a base. Not a trailer queen but decent for a working tractor! Dusty B

Ace sell it in quarts and gallons. Not the best color match, though. I get decals from TM. I try to support our site sponsors, who help make this forum exist.

Bugs and dust are attracted to wet red paint…..No matter which brand….Or how it is sprayed….I don't know much about paint, but this I know as well as anyone who also knows it….But As my friend_______ says,to make me feel better, its a working piece of machinery not a Rolls royce.  Dave…

I got my vinyl-cut deals for my SA and Cub from Maple Hunter, also.
