Stuck in neutral

Postby charlesellis » Sat Aug 16, 2014 9:07 pm

This week I set out to mow some tall grass with my '52 cub. The front right wheel hit a hidden stump, bringing us to a sudden stop. No go in any gear. I took off the gear shift cover to move the forks to the correct position for neutral (As I have done several times before!), but it still would stay in neutral when I tried first, second and third. If the forks are in the correct position, what else could it be? Any ideas?

Since this appears to be a continuing problem I would look for fork damage.

Are you sure the shifter was seated between the forks when you put it back on? Are the forks tight on the shift rods?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I have moved the forks back and forth several times. They look and feel fine. The ball is in the cavity. It moves the gears when I shift, but the tractor does not budge. This is something different from the times before. Could a gear be broken somewhere else?

with the top off the transmission and it is in gear does the gears spin top and bottom? if so problem is after the transmission such as an broken axle shaft or final drive problem

Drain transmission first. Lock brakes. You will or may have gear lub all over.

If the gears don't spin, problem is before the transmission.

If transmission gears spin, remove the differential back cover. Observe differential action, tractor in gear, engine running. The problem will be on the turning, axle shaft side.

Clutch disk. My guess is that you stripped the guts out of the clutch disk.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I am voting for a broken shaft going to one of the final drives. Only one guess why I would think of that. Remove the tranny fill plug and shine a little light down in the hole. If a final drive shaft is broken you will see the differential spinning like crazy when it is in gear and running. You can spin it with the starter rather than running the engine.

Edit, if a final drive shaft is broken, jack up one side at a time and spin the wheel with the transmission in gear. The side that does NOT make the differential spin is the broken side. Start with the left side, it seems to be the most common.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

You don't need to start the tractor up and sling oil all over with the top off the trans cover. Just crank the engine over with the starter, and the ignition switch off.

I would expect the clutch disk to give way before any shafts. My suspicion is you stripped the center out of the clutch disk.

Well, it turns out it was not in neutral at all. I took it to a guy who works on tractors, and he determined that all the gears in the transmission were working fine. It was a broken "output shaft." At least that's what he called it. It is 8-12" long and comes out of the differential on the left side and has a brake drum mounted on it.
Anyone have any idea where to find the part--plus seals and bearing?

Phone JP Tractor Salvage, one of the advertisers on this board. Probably the fastest method of obtaining the shaft.

You could place an ad in The Vine. Several folks part out Cubs. Perhaps a bit less expensive.

Auto parts store for seals and bearings.

I see the short left axle listed several places on ebay. Did all years of the Cub use the same axle?

I probably have one, but it would be out at my farm and I am not sure when I will be going back out there. Should be in a couple days and I could check on its condition. It came off a parts cub I bought that was in very good condition. If you are interested, I will check it out.

Just to be sure, is this the part?
