Lessons learned (oil filter and sediment bowl) Uggh!
Trying to get my 61 lo boy in shape for mowing. Changed the oil and filter. At the first AND second fire up, I had oil spewing out of the top of the filter housing. I could not get that rubber gasket to seal!?? I made one out of cork and that worked. Any wisdom here? Also, I had the hood off for a few weeks while servicing and the fuel sediment bowl wouldn't seal. Had to run to TSC--that worked. My driveway looks like an oilfield!

I'm rebuilding a 54 at the moment…It also spewed a little oil when I got it(same reason)…I'm nearly ready to fire it up and I put a new oil filter in it and it also came with the rubber gasket…I was thinking along your lines if it don't work, I'll cork it or permatex the rubber..Leaking gas from the bowl or the fitting…I had the bowl problem on a ferguson…Changed the gasket…had the fitting problem on a cub, just tightened it up a tad…I took a ride in a couple of Chinooks..And a lot of rides in a huey( Nam)…I'm in Venice in the winter(actually been a resident of Florida for 15 years)…Lots of people but beautiful….Welcome to the forum….Dave….( oh yeah I was a Lineman and we used Chinooks to set high Line poles going over a Mountain once, forgot about that…We used to ride in and out to the job at times on one )….

Filter leak usually caused by a warped cover. (Overtightened)

Thanks for your service. I was at Bragg in the early 80s. I snapped that photo during a field exercise. Seemed like forever ago!

The last oil filter I bought (from IH) and used came with the crappiest rubber gasket I have ever seen. It absolutely would not seal. It would slip and squish out when I tried to tighten the cover. I reused the old harder rubber one. I don't know what I'm going to do next time... These poor quality new parts are driving me crazy.

Re: Lessons learned (oil filter and sediment bowl) Uggh!
Two suggestions on installing the filter cover:
1) Keep the gasket fairly free of oil. I barely oil the surfaces just to head off rust on the outer edges. Completely dry is good too. Do not slather the gasket with oil as you might with a spin-on filter.
2) (This is a lot easier to do than explain.) As you turn the bolt in, rotate the cover to the loosest fit. Keep turning it both ways as you hand tighten the bolt. Once the cover is settled in to the best fit, finish tightening the bolt.

Yes sir it is, an M561! That vehicle got a bad rap for maintenance issues. However, in my experience, it would go anywhere and carry a ton of material. I was quite impressed with the vehicle.
