Did I pay to much?
Hello All,
Well went to The Pontiac threshers reunion tractor show today, and I spied this in the trandin post area. I seen the power unit sticking up and got closer and low and behold a cub power unit on a 50-AW baler. I got kind of interested in a hurry. Engine was free, baler in good plus condition, all original paint, international brown, it appears that it might be a low hour machine. Then I went to the tag and flipped it over expecting a highish price, and I read $600.00 or make offer. Not so bad. Well talked to the guys there and they called the owner and his make offer was $600 firm go figure, well to shorten the story I got him dikered down to $525.00 When we were hooking it up to tow it home had a couple of guys come up and tell me I got a good deal. We were about to leave when a guy on a golf cart came up and said he brought it in for a buddy who ran a scrap yard and that someone had recently drug it in there as junk. I am glad they did not cut it up. Considering by a old price list it weighs around 4500 pounds, I got it bought for scrap price, so that is why he would not budge much. The engine number is, IMCUBM 2689, and the block code is 1.15.X so a 1952.
Well it might be seen at the Half Century of Progress show in Rantoul, Ill next year.
So well I don't think I paid too much but less would have been nice.

It's not fair that you have both of those. I'll take the baler off your hands. Glad to see they've both been saved.

Awesome find - fair price - want to see videos of it in action. I've got a lot of experience with the knotters on a unit like that - should you need help with that.

Yes, that price is way out of line. You really got taken to the cleaners. However, since I am the forums watchdog for such outrageous deals, I am obligated to give you your money back and take possession of the goods. No thanks are necessary, I do this out of the goodness of my heart and for the good of the members.

I do appreciate you looking out for us simpletons that get taken and pay to much. If you weren't so far away I might take you up on this offer.
Anyway glad you all like it. I will try to get some video of it when I get it going. might be a while as I put up grain bins and it is kind of a crunch time.

If I need help I will let you all know, I do thank you for the offers. This might differ from what most are used to as it has twisters, a wire baler. I did find and owners manual in my stash of stuff, so hopefully I can figure it out.
What I might need is a crank, to start it, if anyone might have a junk baler lying around. Not a cub one for the engine but for one for the pulley off the side, so you can crank it from the side. I don't know what it exactly looks like but I would think some one out there might know.
Thanks all,
Russel Foster

Re: Did I pay to much?
Nice score, wish I had one just like it! Truly awesome find.
I believe if you look a bit closer, you'll see another digit behind the "9" in the engine SN. Does this engine have a "R6" block?

Yes there is but had a brain fart and forgot about the last digit, when I posted and just went off the picture. R6? you mean in the part number, on the block? I will look when I get home am leaving early in the morning and won't get back till Sat. night, oh well.
Thanks,
Russel

Re: Did I pay to much?
She's ALIVE Bwaa Haa Haa. Well sort of.
Got her running after much fiddling and aggravation. Plunger really tight but got it loose enough to try baling. Was working had to go really slow. I took some video but have not had the time post yet. Baled good but the wire grippers or holders are worn pretty good, so one side was not holding the wire and it would come out as it baled so it would not twist. I am having a buddy look at them and see if he can weld them up a little.
What I am looking for is the side hand crank, and I any one has a parts baler I would like a different set of gears for the bale measuring wheel. The set I have make the longest of all the gear sets, 42" bales, and I would like ones that make shorter bales. Set 495 174 R1 and 495 173 R1 or set 5171 P and 5170 P.
Thanks all,
Russel

Re: Did I pay to much?
These aren't high capacity balers.
You certainly made out better than I did two years ago when I spied a 50-T on craigslist. They were *VERY* proud of that baler, to the tune of something around $6000 because it was "rare," and the person selling the baler went completely bat-crazy when I didn't respond to his email quickly enough.
On top of that, it didn't work. They had a video of it working on youtube, and all it did was make slabs.
