Picked up a bit of a basket case -we will see (w/Pics added)
Saw an add for a $500 Lo-Boy not too far from the house, so had to at least look, right?
Long story short, of course brought it home.
Story is, mowed with it for years, then something went wrong, unknown at this time, then parked in the barn for 25 years.
Looks like that's about right.
This is what I know so far.
66-67 Lo-Boy, need to check the serial number.
Hood is(was) off, pretty good shape, some rust.
One head light is missing, along with air cleaner and fender tail light.
One turf tire, one ag tire (looks new).
Another unmounted matching new ag tire in the garage, still has the sticker on it. Both ags are new but 25 years sitting, look good.
Belly Mower, questionable.
Engine not stuck.
Looks like a homemade stainless exhaust on it.
Deluxe seat, what cushion?
Battery box shot.
Carb without a ding in it from someone whacking it with a wrench ( I never see one that hasn't been hit.)
I'll put on some pics, and some updates if I get time to tinker this weekend.
Not sure if this is going to turn into a runner or a parter, but I will give it a fair chance.
I really enjoy getting one to fire up after being a mystery machine.
This one is just about a twin to the 68 Lo-Boy I have with the loader on it.
Thackery.
I edited this last picture in; this face met me when I went to pick up the tractor, mind you it was just me and him, the owner allowed me to pick up without him being there. I sent a picture of this head to my wife before I got out of the truck, she texted back "good luck". Ha!

Sounds like my kind of Cub. Good luck with it.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Bill, that did cross my mind.
I just used a pipe wrench to take off the gas cap, wow what a smell, at least a vintage of 25 years.

Just think when that gas was put in there it cost about $0.95 a gallon.

Re: Picked up a bit of a basket case -we will see
Congrats on your find. Sounds like my kind of project and a lot of similarities with the 57 LoBoy that I got last week. Mine is running very well now. Still have to get through all the service items that have been forgotten for many years. Good Luck as you work through it to get it going. Stan
EDIT: I've got another one (std cub) that sat in a shed unmoved and not started for more than 30 years. It is also now a running tractor. The greatest challenge on it was the valves were stuck.

Re: Picked up a bit of a basket case -we will see
Even for parts, it's a score!
I am so behind that it ain't even funny... every time I think of going to an auction or to look at a Cub I just think of the projects I still have. But I am wedged into a city lot, so even something on the back burner is in the way. The 65 Lo Boy does the most work of all my Cubs and lives outside
I have faith in ya Doug (and the Lo Boy), you will get it running!

Re: Picked up a bit of a basket case -we will see
I messed with a bit today as time allowed while cutting wood, mowing and canning tomatoes.
The 25+ year old battery is no good, so its going to scrap.
I turned it over with another battery, turned well but no fire.
It's a blessing for one reason that the hood and gas tank were removed so long ago.
The tank has the most varnished smelly gas I have ever witnessed, however, the carb is dry and does not appear to be too dirty or varnished.
I took the cap off the rotor and the button came out without the conductor attached.
I then pried off the cap to see the points and condenser and all of it is corroded too.
I had aired up all the tires, and they seem to be holding so far.
That's all for an update.

Sounds like you are plugging away at it. Glad it's you and not me! I just don't have the time for such a project!

Re: Picked up a bit of a basket case -we will see
I don't have time for a new project either, but it is nice to tinker with for a bit here and there.
I pulled all the plugs, cleaned them, all had carbon, but #1 was the worst.
Also thumb compression on all but #1, valves look like they are moving not sure if they are seating.
Changed the points and condenser, no spark, and coil gets hot, didn't think to feel the coil until after a few tries.
I did get one of the other Lo-Boys out for some seat time today with the potato plow.

Got it started, had really weak spark or no spark.
Cleaned several electrical connections, turned over way better but still weak spark.
Started checking plug wires and cleaning connections and then found the coil wire was burned and brittle.
Someone had put carbon core wires on and that was the biggest problem.
I put on some old wires that I had laying around and she fired right up.
Now on to cleaning the gas tank.

Re: Picked up a bit of a basket case -we will see (w/Pics ad
I put on a makeshift pony tank and have taken it out for a few drives around the barn and such.
Everything seems to be in good order for the most part.
I had tried to push the clutch and engage the PTO before trying any gears, I could not get the PTO to engage, just wanted to grind.
So I figured that I would have to adjust the clutch, but after I got the pony tank on and decided to actually get moving everything about the clutch and
PTO seemed OK. Is that just because the clutch plates are sticky, or stiff, etc.
I took the one rear wheel in that had the weathered out turf tire on it in to the tire place and had the ag tire put on.
Rides a lot nicer with two ag tires rather than one of each.
I want to wash out the gas tank but have not figured out what method to use.
Last time I had a messy one I tied it to the front of the cement mixer, through in some nuts and bolts and let her run for about a day. That did a suitable job.
The mixer is at a friends house and I haven't come up with another rig to spin a tank.
Also, this tank is bad inside, I can't tell if it is just varnished up gas, or rotted rusty tank, or what.
Some rusty smelly stuff has come out already. Maybe the tank is trash, time will tell.
Ideas are welcome.

Rick Prentice strapped his to the rear wheel (on blocks) with nuts & solvent inside. May still be pix on here.
