Attempting to bring one back to life.

Postby Barnyard » Fri Sep 05, 2014 10:56 pm

A few people have asked why I left for the Rocky Mountain CubFest with one Cub on the trailer but showed up with two. It turns out one Cub jumped aboard as we passed through Indiana.

It is a 1965 with a 42" mower and a locked engine. The seller said it was his grandfather's and had been used until about five years ago. When I stopped to look at it I stuck a crank in and found the engine stuck. We hammered out a deal we both could live with and took it west with us.

Today some of the guys wanted to make it a project so I pulled the and starter and tried to move the engine backward with a pry bar. It moved a little so the head came off next. The number three cylinder was cruddy so JP Cubs grabbed some sand paper and worked the cylinder wall over pretty good.

I took a wire wheel and gave the head and engine mating surface a good brushing and made it look somewhat pretty.

Unfortunately we found this just above the number 2 cylinder.

We decided to go ahead anyway just to see what it will do so we put it back together and gave it a try but it wasn't getting gas. Tomorrow it will get the carb looked over and we will try again. Regardless of what happens with the engine, it was bought as a non runner so there will be no loss if it fails.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

its sad that people let it get that bad. if the tractor is maintained, ran regularly (used), and stored indoors im pretty sure it would never look that bad. I mow my lawn with it weekly and push snow with it, it seems that's the best way to keep it alive, regular use and I store it in a barn/garage. its rare it sits outside for more then a day.

as far as the crack in the block, what would cause that? would leaving water in the tractor over winter cause that kind of damage? do these engines have freeze plugs, it they don't that makes it even more critical that they have antifreeze in them for winter months.

I would have filled the crack with high temp silicone as far down in the holes as i could and the head gasket would take care of it

That crack is water hole to water hole, so as long aw the head gasket makes a seal it should not need anything else, unless it is worse than it looks.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

We are somewhat limited with resources here at the CubFest so the plan is to get it running to see what else may be needed. I will tear it down when I have time this winter.

Concur. W series Allis Chalmers typically have cracks in the block between cylinder liners. Head gasket seals the cracks.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Yeah, what a surprise that was back then. Ol' Susie Q is still going strong.
