D9 Flail Mower questions

Postby Ken (48 Cub) » Mon Sep 15, 2014 8:37 pm

I bought a Mott D9 flail mower last year at Cubarama and am finally getting around to mounting it for this year.

I need some pictures of how the mule drive is mounted. Do I need to remove the draw bar to mount it...I hope not.

I know John is doing a demo at Cubarama about belt adjustment, etc. I'm sure I will need that too.

As an additional note, if you have the earlier idler pulleys they mount differently there were a set of tabs that welded to the drawbar brackets, or drawbar I don't remember which then a bracket for the pulleys bolted to the tabs. When the pto pulley is mounted it actually extends past the end of the pto a little to line up with the idlers.

Looks like you pretty well have it under control, though you will probably have to take the idlers back off and remove one bolt from the idler bracket to to mount the drawbar on that bracket if you want it on the tractor.

Here is the lift

I got it all together and cut some grass, works good. Is the roller bar supposed to touch the ground when in use?

You can mow with the roller on the ground. I float the flail mower with the roller off the ground. Reason, rocks and uneven ground.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks Eugene, same here. This is new construction and the ground is still rough with hidden surprises. :)

The roller height is adjustable, I normally keep mine at the lowest cut setting which is approx. 2 to2 1/4 inches. Mowing my yard which is fairly smooth, but does have a few dips in it I let the roller carry the mower, but keep the lift chains snug, so if I cross a low spot, etc. they will hold the mower up enough to keep it from scalping as it hits the forward edge coming out of the low spot. When mowing along the road, or the neighbors food plots, etc. I carry the mower with the lift high enough to avoid rocks, rough spots, etc.

Consider replacing the jockey bar. EJP has a photo of his home made replacement. Works great. Eliminates the rattle and you can adjust the mower left or right to help line up the belt.

Here is what Eugene refereed to, it is a top link for one of the larger 3 point hitches, which I cut in the middle and welded in a short piece of pipe to extend it. The anchor pins are a couple of cut off bolts I drilled for a lynch pin.
