drive belt pulley at crankshaft moves freely in and out upon shutdown creating unwanted noise

If the crankshaft pulley is moving in and out, that is more of a problem than if it is the fan. Crankshaft pulley should have no play whatsoever. The fan pulley and associated shaft could be worn and causing the same problem. Have you oiled the fan pulley?

Pulley on end of crankshaft moves.
Then the center main crankshaft bearing, a thrust bearing is shot.
Other less likely possibility is that the pulley is loose on the crankshaft - not likely though since it is a press fit.
What is the history on this tractor?
