Have you actually checked the rpm, remember, a cub only designed to run at 1800 rpm, and the governor will limit it to that.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

You can either count the "bangs" or you can get yourself an induction tachometer that takes signals from the #1 spark plug and shows you the RPMs.

But, if you're lacking on power and it doesn't sound right odds are you're not getting the RPMs.

I use a cheap tach/dwell I got from AutoZone or O'reilly's or one of those discount auto parts stores, for less than $20. It is really easy to hook up, one clip to ground and one to the side of the distributor. You just have to remember to reverse the leads to account for the positive earth.

I like the dual purpose unit because it also lets me verify the point gap without disassembling the distributor.

Not to pour salt in a potential wound, but it could be more serious than that, like a cracked head or a cracked block. Regardless you will need to pull the head to find out.

When you take the head off, clean it and inspect it carefully. I just had to replace my head as it was doing the samething and a crack was discovered.
