Blade Availability For Bush Hog #412?
Does anyone know where I would even begin to look for a new blade for my model 412 Bush Hog belly mower? The local Bush Hog dealer says no longer available. It is a single 42" blade withe 4 mounting holes. The old blade has worn down to 40".

I found a claimed high Boron replacement for ( what was it ? ) $138 plus S&H . As I recall it was Indian manufacture and located here in America . Dang if I didn't bookmark it and darn if I can turn it up again .

Re: Blade Availability For Bush Hog #412?
Here's my blade. It looks like some sort of ancient iron age relic. It has obviously been ground down on both sides to make it reversable. It has lost a couple of inches in the process and anymore grinding will make it even shorter.

I have a Bush Hog 412 mower with a practically new blade. It is sharpened on both sides, with no pitch on the blade.

You could find a good welding shop and they could easily make you one of those blades. I bet it would not cost over 50-60 bucks.
You could heat it and dip it in oil and it would be as good as new. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Blade Availability For Bush Hog #412?
I have the exact problem, I have a bushog 412 with great body, blade, and mule drive. But my main spindle housing broke in several places and when I tried welding it, it just crumbled. Ive I could find the whole spindle assembly, Id be using it. It is a great mower that will handle really thick growth.

This part should be available from Bush Hog. I reciently got this parts list by contacting the factory in Selma, AL.

Re: Blade Availability For Bush Hog #412?
That is some pretty interesting info. First, I bet the blade isn't cheap, but it should last a long time. Interesting to me are the different model designations and how simple they are decoded. I suppose that they use different mounting brackets with the same deck (with the exception of the G) similar to what Woods does with the 42 mower. So my guess the 412A is for the Farmall A, the 412SA is for the farmall Super A, the 412C is for the Farmall Cub, and a 412G would be for the Allis Chalmers G (rear engined cultivating tractor).

Re: Blade Availability For Bush Hog #412?
Your pages picture got me to do a little internet digging and I found Messicks Bush Hog page and a listing for a 412 mower. http://www.messicks.com/BH/84031.aspx It lists the Part #900 blade on the "discontinued and obsolete blades" page. But then it lists it for $125.15 in the "Pulley-Bushing-Bearing Box" section.

Looking at the replacement part price ($600+) I would look for a machinest to build one from the old one as a pattern.

Intersteing fact, my wifes uncle owns and operates on of the largest machine companies in OKC and does lots of militqary and goverement contracts, but he felt that making an antique tractor parts was not worth the time and noone would be wanting parts.

It's not that no one would want the parts, it's that no one would want to pay what it costs to make the parts plus a fair profit for the shop owner to make it worth his while.
I don't know what the going rate is for a machine shop but even at $50/hr, you can run up a $500 bill just in labor on a part as simple as a spindle, especially when the machinist has to reverse-engineer the part from a broken or badly worn pattern.

Somewhere I have missed where the replacement blade is $600. There are three different sources listed in this thread for $120-140 range.staninlowerAL wrote:.......Looking at the replacement part price ($600+) I would look for a machinest to build one from the old one as a pattern.
