Just when things were going good
Wouldn't you know it, Just when things were going good the engine sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders smoking and popping out the exhaust Looking around there is bubbling coming from the head gasket on the mag side, quickly called around and the only one that can get it for me right away is NAPA so I will have it tomorrow.
I guess I will finally change the 12 year old plugs and adjust the valves while I am at it. I really did not need the expense right now but that's life I guess.

Re: Just when things were going good
This is the area that was bubbling
This is what ended up on the ground after draining the cooling system
I took 1/2 the engine apart and the head is off

Re: Just when things were going good
Looks like I lucked out, after scraping the crap off the head and engine they don't look bad and no cracks
I also adjusted the valves, went over them twice just to be sure. Now we have to wait until tomorrow to pick up the head gasket and the copper spray.
Question are the head bolts special or can I use Grade 8 Bolts?

Re: Just when things were going good
I got mine from Hamilton Bob….They were grade 9 and the correct length….The long grade 8's have to be cut off to keep them from growing mushrooms in the water jacket….I think Hamilton Bob charged me 22 dollars if I remember correct…glad you got them out without breaking one…My preference would be use the factory type…….Dave

Valves probably were last done, when Ike was president! Plugs, during Nixon's time!

Question. Cracked head? 3rd image down. Bottom row of head bolts, right of 3rd bolt, up to square then up to 2nd head bolt adjacent to spark plug.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Just when things were going good
McMaster-Carr also has grade 8 ultra-high corrosion resistant bolts. Length can be adjusted by using a grade 8 washer under the bolt.
Bob
Edit: They also carry grade 9, but I didn't check the sizes and lengths.

I was thinking Tractor Supply, I need to get the tractor up and running tomorrow and I don't trust using the old ones. I prayed every turn of the socket wrench when taking them out.

I think Eugene is referring to this. It may just be part of the casting. I see no problem o the bottom side.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I will double check that tomorrow for sure, but it might be part of the casting.

Darn it Eugene you were right, not sure how you picked that out but.....
Since I can't afford a head I will have to pull the one off the 48 and inspect it for cracks. As a last resort I will have to pull the head from the 53 which was replaced a few years ago.
Oh and it's raining today
