All,
I'm a retired old guy (well, sorta...58 is the new 30, right?) that just bought an old farmhouse in Coastal Georgia. Old farmhouses need old tractors, so i just came home with a 1951 Cub with a 42" Kub Klipper belly mower to cut my 3 acres of grass. Farmall Cubs and 140s bring back fond memories of the thrill of "going for a ride on the tractor" with my Grandfather 50 years ago. The Cub's name is Ida Mae and she is now getting much loving attention.
I have gone thru the electrical and ignition system, replacing plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. I've replaced wires from the VR to the ignition/ammeter, cleaned all connections and the VR points. Nothing done yet to generator except clean the connections. She fires up great but the ammeter does not show a charge, even with the throttle opened up. That is, until I drive it around the yard once. Then it seems to start charging well. Normal? Maybe brushes need attention?

Re: Newbie with a charging system question
Yep, it was polarized. Charges great once I make a circle around the yard. Just not on initial start up, even at advanced throttle. I haven't had to polarize a generator since my 1964 corvair. Brought back memories.

Re: Newbie with a charging system question
I've just been through all of this with my restoration of Rex'48. I followed the attachments and eventually got it all sorted. I did notice at one point that it was not charging until the light switch was tapped or touched. I also noticed a 10-15 second delay with the voltage regulator - Now that I am using the Cutout Relay it charges instantly.

Re: Newbie with a charging system question
By all means, go through the flowchart tst posted. Based on your symptoms, it seems most likely the problem is at the regulator. Note I said "AT the regulator", not "the regulator". The regulator may be sticking and not pulling in when it should. (You may find a soft tap on the regulator lid will work as well as driving around the yard.)
You mentioned going over wires and connections, but have you gone over all the ground connections? The regulator is grounded through a small cable to the regulator base, the regulator base grounds to the regulator bracket. The bracket grounds to the engine, the engine to the bell housing, it to the transmission, transmission to the axle tube, to the battery box, to the battery ground cable and finally to the battery. Meanwhile the generator is grounded to its bracket, the bracket to the regulator bracket and then down the same path. If those connections are not all clean and making a connection, you will have trouble.
Ken, didn't you find bad ground connections at the root of some of your electrical trouble? New paint related?

Re: Newbie with a charging system question
I had a similar system with my Farmall H, and after I polarized it all was ok.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Newbie with a charging system question
thanks, all. Jim, you reminded me of the ground path and I never thought to check the path from the VR to the battery. I'll get to that this weekend. In the meantime, I'm having a blast just toodling around the yard.

Re: Newbie with a charging system question
After going thru the flowchart tst provided, it was obvious that the VR was bad (or intermittent). Got a new one today and she is charging wonderfully! Thanks for all the help.
