My 55 cub has an underslung muffler, (whistle end) and as I was looking on line for a replacement the thought went through my head (it happens)
what is the real difference between the vertical muffler and underslung? Is there less baffling in the underslung due to the length of pipe involved?
Just wondering which has a BETTER sound? Thought you might have dealt with this yourselves at one point.
Bruce.

Re: muffler question ???
That's going to start a hornet's nest similar to asking what kind/grade of oil to use. It's a very personal question. Some have said that they prefer a straight vertical pipe to a muffler.
I'm looking forward to seeing what responses you get.

Re: muffler question ???
They sound very much alike. The difference is that on the discharge end of the muffler the underslung unit has the whistle cut to deflect the exhaust downward rather than straight back. This is a definite advantage if you are using an implement such as a transplanter where someone is seated directly behind the tractor or when pulling a trailer giving the kids a ride in a parade etc.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Re: muffler question ???
If you're mowing under trees, etc. the underslung is one less item to watch out for.

So, do you think you can retrofit a 1949 cub with an underslung exhaust? I have a lot of trees and sometimes I'm afraid of my vertical pipe breaking at the manifold...
I suppose with enough money you can do about anything.

It can easily be done for about $200.00.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: muffler question ???
Unless I missed something cub.bub is asking about the difference in the mufflers only. Not the entire exhaust system. As I read it he is looking for the difference between the muffler used on vertical systems and the whistle cut muffler used on under - slung systems and wants to know whether there is a significant sound difference between the two or if there is a reason to choose one over the other when replacing the muffler on his already existing under-slung system.

Re: muffler question ???
Whistle cut? What is that? Googling that brings up a add-on to make your car sound like it has a turbo.
A vertical muffler tends to be a straight-through resonator type, while underslung will have some internal baffles. The baffles, aside from being more effective in silencing exhaust, will give the muffler a degree of spark arresting, which should be important in a off road machine blowing exhaust directly to the ground.

Not in this case.
