Nice Barn Find '61 1-owner Cub
Got a call from a gentleman the other day who had a Red Cub in Original Condition with a Fast Hitch and some equipment. He claimed it was a '64 model and having that I felt like there was a small possibility of it having a white hood I hurried over first thing Saturday to see what he had. We get there and notice right off that it isn't a 64 model but is older, and I ran the serial number and found it to be a 1961 model. The owner had purchased it new and had told us how he had raised a garden every year with it over the years. It was in impeccable condition to be original and he had told us everything he had done to it over the years (repairs, jobs, etc.). He said that for years he would wipe it down real good after he used it and cover it with a towel and park it in his garage. His enclosed garage was actually built for the Cub. Right off I noticed the original Tachometer attachment and couldn't wait to start it to see if it all worked. According to the owner, the hours are accurate (within a couple due to a broken cable) and everything is original on the tractor except for the Fuel Cap, tires, spark plugs (3 times over the years), points/condensor (twice), headlight bulbs, tachometer cable, and the alternator conversion of course. He had the original generator rebuilt and said it died after about a month, so he converted it last year. He also claimed it has the original clutch and has never been split apart, the oil pan hasn't ever been off, nor has it had any major work done. No breaks or welds anywhere and it sure does run and operate smooth. With the exception of some loose tie rods, and an oil leak (front main seal or oil pan), it sure is a true survivor!! He even kept all of the original manuals, brochures, and there was a 1968 Parts Price Guide in the mix. I also got the complete battery box, and the original generator. It sure does feel good to find such a nice Cub and someone who actually appreciated and took care of their tractor......especially after 53 years. Real nice guy and real nice Cub. I think she is gonna be a keeper! Who knows.....we might just go through her and address the issues and give her a freshen'n up with some new paint.

Re: Nice Barn Find '61 1-owner Cub
Really nice Cub! I wish my 61 had been in that kind of original condition when I found it. I wonder if any of the documentation with the tractor indicates anything about the fast hitch. I had the impression that the older style hitch with the depth lever was last used somewhere around 1957. I wonder if maybe the dealer installed this hitch when the tractor was new. I do much prefer this earlier style hitch.

That is very cool. I don't think I would paint it just yet. It's only original once!

Re: Nice Barn Find '61 1-owner Cub
Thanks for all the comments and feedback guys. I've also had some feedback about the tach mounting. The PO did say he had a hard time finding the original cable and finally got an IH dealer out of state to get him one because the dealer parts guys here kept telling him a Cub didn't have a Tach. It is possible it is not the "correct" one but it still could be. I believe there is a label still on it with the part number. I realize the tach has been moved and isn't mounted correctly and will most likely move it back when/if I clean up and paint the tractor. For now, I know where it goes but it is fine as is. Thanks for noticing that all, because I was wondering the same when I saw that empty bracket.

Chase

Re: Nice Barn Find '61 1-owner Cub
Here are the goodies that came with it!! I'm proud of these books because some of them you just never see because noone keeps them (in my expierences at least). It's funny that a "Complete Hopper for Fertilizer Units" cost only $26 in 1968. Call Case/IH now and they'll tell you they have to order the parts seperate and put it together and charge you accordingly........about $800 accordingly.
