Digging taters

Postby Super A » Tue Nov 11, 2014 10:14 pm

I harvested my sweet potato crop this evening. My folks have propagated these taters for years; they are sort of a heirloom variety. I was pleasantly surprised how they turned out. We had so much rain this summer that I wasn't expecting much.

This will probably be my Cub's last ride for the winter, I've got some off-season maintenance planned for it. It is in need of a good tuneup, replacing a leaky sediment bowl, and a few other odds n' ends. She should be good to go come next spring.

I used the 193 plow to do the digging. It works good unless the row is really tall, then the drawbar tries to drag. Running just above idle in first gear rolls the taters right out of the ground so that I have to do very little raking to get them up.

Great looking tatter crop! Dug my this past with my uncles MF135 and out mule middlebuster. SO disappointed with our crop only long tubulars and no full taters. So we turned them all back.Hoping for better luck next year.

How do you set your 193 for digging without tearing the spuds up. I hand dug 250' of Kennebecs this year. The majority of which were lost to wire worms. I've been plotting and scheming on how to set a middle buster or fabricate a middle buster to dig spuds, but haven't solved that problem yet.
Come up to the NW part of the state and your Cub can have some winter work.

Fast hitch or regular? Can you find an old metal plow beam? If reg cub hitch mount beam in center with large middle buster shovel. Weigh it so it will go into the ground. Or just make one from bar stock. Biggest problem is weight or down pressure. Make sure shovel point is not pointing up in working position.

The potato digger we had when I was a kid was a large flat potato row sized shovel. On the top end of the shovel was a bunch of tines. The digger was dropped into the ground at the end of the row and towed forward. Earth and potatoes would move up the shovel. Loose dirt would fall through the tines. Large clods and potatoes would drop off the back, in a row.

No conveyer or shaker found on commercial units.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Just go deep enough to go below them. Rolls them right out. Just have to scratch around a little to get them all.

I really want a fast hitch IH middle buster for the Super A for digging them. Same principle, just get below the taters and roll them out.

I have a horsedrawn middlebuster plow adapted to a cub drawbar. I can get a picture of the complete plow if interested. Stan

Kinda what I was thinking Stan. I'm using a Brazilian middle buster. Still have the flat shovel we used on the layoff bar on the front. (not a good idea). Al they are t hard to make, I made mine.

Don't know how to get it here, but Carbonpm1 has a picture of one on the vine. Also Al, you might luck up and find a Lienbach one. They are better suited to larger tractors than cubs. And try search function here for more ideas and pix.

Fast hitch plow from "The Vine", I also have one that is just the plow that mounts on the foot of a 3 pt cultivator.
