Rear Seal Retainer

Postby Brandon Webb » Tue Dec 30, 2014 10:46 am

Was wondering how to fix or if anyone is still fixing the rear seal retainers on cubs? My dad has his cub split replacing the clutch and wants to fix his rear seal where it's leaking. Thanks

I have read that there is a problem with new Rear Crankcase Seals not fitting properly with "early" #251363R1 retainers. One vender states that you must change to a "later" #251363R2 rear sear retainer or use Loctite 660 or something similar to retain the seal in the R1 retainer.

I assume this is because the R1 retainer has a bore size of 3.881" and the R2 retainer has a bore size of 3.876".

Since my engine is a 1950 vintage, with a R2 part number, can I assume it has the "later" R2 retainer?

Is a leak due to a worn seal or a defected retainer, or both?

A leak can be due to a bad seal, a warped/cracked retainer, the seal moving in the retainer or all three. Your best bet is a remanufactured retainer and seal from Tim Talleur (tst), as mentioned above. PM him for details.

I have seen R2 retainers where you could push the seal in with your fingers and others that had the recommended crush of .007" (if I recall correctly). I just put an R2 on an engine I am building that required a nice press fit and I used a little adhesive just to be on the safe side.

Tim (tst) has told me that most of the cores he gets are warped and he has to straighten them before machining for a larger OD seal with the proper ID. I bought one of his machined retainers that last time I saw him and it looks good, and it was not very expensive. Considering the amount of work involved for a do-over I would only use a retainer I had a very high level of confidence in.

I used Loctite 660, which is a highly viscous silver compound, on a rear seal about three years ago. The new seal was an easy finger press into the retainer. This tractor is a working farm tractor and I have had no leakage or problems with the set up. As I recall, I did install the double lip seal.
