Radiator Screen Cover

Postby Stanton » Thu Jan 29, 2015 11:12 am

When covering the front screen to increase operating temperature during cold weather months, is there a need to address the side openings, between the doglegs and engine?

I realize that the object is to reduce, not eliminate air flow across the radiator. Therefore, a cover should only block approximately 50% of the screen to prevent overheating. My thought would be that since the fan is designed to blow toward the engine (it pulls the air through the radiator), the openings behind the doglegs should remain open.

Thanks.

Search the internet for tractor weather break or heat houser.

The canvas on the heat housers we had covered both sides of the engine.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I slip a piece of cardboard between the screen and the radiator that covers about 75% of the radiator. I plow snow in the winter and have yet to have an overheating issue. Once the temps are above about 25 degrees, I remove the cardboard. It would be nice to have a shutter system so that it could be set wherever you want it without having to take the grille on and off.

I do the same as Skwimjim, except I use a piece of the 1/4 inch thick fan fold insulation for use under siding I happen to have on hand.

I keep the insulation on hand for multiple uses. I have a layer of it under and behind the seat on my ZTR so the engine heat does not bother the driver (me) quite so much. Cut pieces and put inside black trash bag to darken and increase sound proofing in my daughter's window (she works nights, sleeps in daytime), etc.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Here is what I thought of so far, it was a banner I found after a wind storm, i cut to fit and notched for the grill tabs.

I just use a piece of clear plastic (from garbage bag) on each of my Cubs...
Held in place at top with a couple clothespins...covers entire grill.
