new to farmall's and Forum

Postby gtc4d » Tue Feb 17, 2015 8:36 am

Hello, I am new to Farmall's and to the forum, Looks like a great place to learn about these machines. I just bought a 48 cub only to discover bent rod and broken piston, but that is part of the fun. Thanks to all who have posted because i am sure i will spend much time on this site learning from previous post.

Thanks,
Todd Seaford :thanx:

Todd--as the others have said, welcome to the forum. Don't be bashful in getting your lil piece of iron back in running order. Take a good look at where all the Cubfests are and hopefully you can join us for fun and tractor fixin'. Take a good look at your engine and see if you can determine why the rod is bent and the piston is broken--may be some collateral damage hanging in there somewhere but its a challenge that sure can be rewarding!! Welcome to the Forum Todd!
Sounds like you're going to be "splittin and gettin at it" The Cubs are fun Tractors to work on, if you decide to split, Please be sure to read up on the splitting of the Cub before you get started, that is what is emphasized most...SAFTEY!
Ask if you have questions and keep us updated (with pictures) :D

Welcome to the forum Todd. I have to admit you have something unusual. A broken piston and bent rod is something I have never heard of in a cub before.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Welcome! As John said, that's awfully rare in a cub. The only thing I could guess is something like a nut or bolt fell in the spark plug hole and was rammed back up against the head on the compression stroke? There's a chance you could just pull the head and oil pan to pull the rod and piston, and inspect the cylinder walls. If everything else looks ok, you may get away with a new piston, rings, and rod. I'm sure it's not the right way to go, but if all else is good, it would probably work for many years.

An early model Bush Hog 412 mower :{_}: If you aren't familiar, that one most likely DOES NOT have an overrunning clutch. Not a big deal if you are aware of it. The momentum (flywheel effect) of the spinning blade can drive the rear wheels a couple feet even when you have the clutch pushed in and you're stomping on the brakes. Not advisable to try near a big tree, fence posts, or heading for a ditch.

While you have that engine broke down, have them take a close look at the crankshaft. Mine was cracked in three places. My mechanic went through three used cranks, with cracks, before I provided him with a new one.

Good luck.

Hi I'm new to the club. I'm trying to get my father's Cub going again and need to know where to look to find the serial number. The old Cub has been sitting for years now and has accumulated a lot of dirt and grease. It will turn over but won't fire up. Thanks for any help spotting the year model and serial number so I can look at the manual to start.

Prime the oil pump before you try to start that sitting cub.
