Others have shared good advice. My earlier response was predicated on the title of your thread (Finishing mowers) and my answer remains the same regarding the Woods 59 which is a finish mower.

Bill

I'll be using it for established lawns since I have the sickle mower for taller grasses. So yes, I need a finishing mower.

From the many suggestions offered, it looks like the Woods L59 got the most votes but since the others were strong contenders, I'll seriously consider any of them, if I find one in good condition and reasonably priced. Having choses will make the hunt easier.

I was just reading the Operator's Manual for the Woods rotary Mower, L59 A-3/L306 A-3. On the cover sheet it says,
"For use on International Harvester A, Super A, 100, 130, & 140"......there is no mention to the Cub.

I take it from your posts that some of you are using the L59 with no problems, so was the Cub not mentioned because of it's small horsepower rating?

Thanks,
Larry

Correct. What you want is a Woods 59C-1 or C-2.

I have a Woods 42 mounted on a standard Cub. What I like is that the mower deck elevates quite a bit higher than my other mowers. The smaller cutting width makes slugging it out with tall grass and some brush easier.

As to the quality of cut, not much difference between the Woods, IH, and Mott.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Don-
There is a Woods 59 on the local CL. The yellow paint is good with the original decals. Even the guards look original. The guy is asking $550, is that a good price? Should the Idler Bracket & Idler Assembly be included for that price?

Thanks,
Larry

others may differ , but in the deep south , at that price , you should get a 6-pack of your favorite imported beer  . I have a 59 c-1 on my loboy , and three 42's , on a '78 , '75 , and a '64 . all cut fine , but finish mower , 59 hands down . and fast . I cut 1 1/2 acre in 20 minutes , 2nd gear easy , once a week . minimal weedeating . coppersmythe........................ps: I just read dons post below , he is spot on , it would be nice if you could run it on a cub , listening for "grinding".

IMHO, for that price, it should be 100% complete, be power washed and have new blades. :D That price seems steep by about $100, but I don't know how common these mowers are in your area. When you go to look at it, have the seller tip it up so that you can spin the blades. The spindles should sound smooth, with no grinding or other unusual noises. Same goes for the sheaves on the mule drive. The mule drive may still be on the seller's tractor. Others will pipe in with their thoughts.

I just talked with the guy, he says that he has everything needed to install it to a cub. And the belt is nearly new and he installed new bearings in the idler pulleys recently.

I would like to pay less but he's got it and I want it, so.....

Larry, the mule drive is the set of pulleys and bracket on the back. Make sure you get the pto pulley also along with all the lifting hardware from the mower to the front rockshaft.

I agree with Don, it is about a $400.00 unit, but it depends on location and availability. It wouldn't hurt to go in and offer $350-$400. al he can say is no and you can work it from there. A lot of sellers expect haggeling over a price.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Is he including it all in the sale????? Seriously, he may THINK he has everything, in reality he may or may not have everything. Most sellers are honest and some what knowledgeable about what they are selling. You have to watch out for the ones who think they are but don't know. There are several different versions of the Woods 59. Decks the same but mounting brackets different. The older ones with the H frame, newer ones with the single pole, if it has a fast hitch or doesn't. Just make sure you know EXACTLY what you are getting for that price. Finding a bracket or two to make it work on YOUR Cub (not just A Cub he says it fits, several different versions of Cubs, just like the Woods 59, even though they are all similar) could cost you even more after you've already bought the mower. If you're paying a premium price, you deserve a premium accounting of what's included and verification that it all fits.

You've titled your post with "finish mowers" so I take it that you wish for a high quality unit. The multi-blade types will deliver a nicer looking lawn cut than the brush hog/single blade types. I'm wondering what type of tires your Cub has: agricultural lug type or "R-3" turf type? The ag tires provide way more traction on damp/wet sod but leave marks...the turf type minimize tire marks but have only about one-third of the traction. Does your lawn area have slope?

Woods mowers are probably the benchmark for tractor belly mowers with parts readily available BUT expensive in my opinion. If you keep the bearings lubed, the belt tension correct and clean the mower regularly and store your unit indoors, you can get about twenty years from these units before overhauling/major repairs. I use "fluid film" by 3M on the undersides of my mowers to help with under deck buildup of debris and to thwart corrosion.
