Re: 1958 Cub Wagner Loader
While reading the manual I discovered that the model number that I previously stated is incorrect. That number was on the bucket tilt actuator. The loader I D tag is supposed to be on the right side frame near the raise/lower pivot point. I don't remember seeing 1 but I will scrape some paint in the morning. Also on the front cover is an illustration showing some of the dimensional differences between a standard cub and a LoBoy.

Re: 1958 Cub Wagner Loader
While reading the manual Barnyard found I discovered that I read the wrong serial number. The tag that I previously read is on the bucket tilt actuator. The manual shows the loader I D Tag on the frame right side top. It was painted over but the model # was stamped 45 L which indicates that it was built for a LoBoy and not modified as I previously suspected. All other information was apparently painted not stamped and is gone.
The manual has a very detailed drawing and description of all the hydraulic lines and connections which I copied and took to the hydraulic shop. Price quote for 13 lines and new fittings is $240. I think that is very reasonable. Probably less than the fluid I need to buy.

When draining the hydraulic oil, work as much oil out as you can. Pump the cylinders and disconnect hydraulic lines if necessary. Otherwise any new oil you put in will wind up contaminated.
I would take a very close look at the seal glands on the cylinders as well. If they leak, water can easily get in too.

Re: 1958 Cub Wagner Loader
When I removed the hydraulic lines from the loader I found that the supply line to the control block had been ruptured and the connection on the Bypass Block was disconnected and the block had a plug installed in it. I haven't gotten the lines back from the hydraulic shop yet but I am concerned that the tractor may have been damaged if it was run in this condition. What precautions should I take before trying to start the tractor ? I have not tried to start yet.

Re: 1958 Cub Wagner Loader
I may have just answered my own question. I have a new bypass block that I plan to install on my 1966 Cub when I get the I H 1000 Loader refinished. The bypass inlet port is not relieved therefore you cannot plug the outlet port without potential damage to the pump and possibly other components. I will remove the pump and inspect for any damage especially to the drive gear. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this ? Is there an inspection process or procedure to follow ?

Re: 1958 Cub Wagner Loader
If it has been running with that line plugged rater than bypassed, most likely your pump is junk. Possibly shaft broken, or bushing burned out, etc. As you have probably learned, a bypass hose should have been installed when the loader was disconnected. I assume the touch control is not working at present either.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Remove the pump and lines. Make a block-off plate out of Masonite, thin plywood or something similar, using the pump gasket as a template. Plug the open holes in the Touch Control block with small tapered rubber plugs, available at the hardware store, to keep the dirt out. Remove the nut, lock washer, gear and key from the pump shaft and open it up. Let us know what you find. You may have to use a low pressure impact to get the nut loose and maybe a press to get the gear off. At the very least, you should replace the shaft seal o-ring. http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/396fp.htm

Re: 1958 Cub Wagner Loader
I haven't started or even rolled the engine, except by hand, on this tractor yet. The previous owner said he started it a "few months ago " using ether sprayed directly into the carburetor. I just received a couple carb rebuild kits yesterday and the hydraulic lines will be ready this afternoon or Monday. So I'm close to rolling the engine for a start.
When I removed the hydraulic lines there was almost no hydraulic fluid in the touch control and the loader reservoir was completely empty. I will remove the pump per Don's instructions and see if I can get the engine started normally. Is there any chance of metal bits possibly from the pump drive being in the engine oil pan ? I'm thinking of dropping the pan to clean and inspect.

Good idea. I'd also take a close look at the condition of the removed hydraulic pump before attempting a start. Don't forget to prime the engine oil pump, if you haven't already.

If I can't find the first, what would your recommend for the second?

Your local farm and ranch supply store will have the equivalent oil cheaper than the auto parts store.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I have been busy with "HONEY DO's" and getting the Spring garden ready. I will be back working on the tractors Monday when the wife goes back to work.

That's the route I wound up going. Turns out, my nearest NAPA dealer is twenty-six miles away so I went to TS and found one that says it replaces IH brand fluid. Hopefully it covers all the bases but for the time being the screeching sound in my TC should go away.
