1952 and 1958 Restoration Update

Postby LeoM » Wed Mar 11, 2015 2:51 pm

The Cub that I took to the Deep South Cub Fest is slowly moving forward. I got it to start using the battery and got some good run time on it. I added a can of Sea Foam to the crankcase and added some to the fuel. It ran a little rough at first but smoothed out as it ran. Once up to temp I added some Aluma Seal to the radiator and the crack in the head sealed. The radiator had a small leak but it too sealed. I have a small auxiliary tank and stopped and restarted the engine 4 or 5 times to refuel. The engine started immediately each time. The longer it ran the smoother it got. There was a small amount of dark smoke and it would belch a little when throttled up. There is a small oil leak at the rear of the engine where it bolts to the torque tube. The Touch Control had no response. PTO is smooth and quiet. I had put the original carb back on ( I had the carb from the 1966 on while at the Cub Fest) after I cleaned it and replaced the float needle valve. After several hours of run time the carb started flooding so I figured it was a good time to stop and start checking to see if this is a parts tractor or worth the time to restore. I pulled the plugs and all were covered with carbon dust which was expected. Cylinders 2, 3, & 4 have over 90 psi compression, number 1 was above 40 psi. I plan to clean things up change the oil and get it restarted in a week or 2.
The priority now is to focus on the 1958 with the Wagner Loader and see how much damage was done when the hydraulic pump was run with no flow. I plan to pull the hydraulic pump and drop the oil pan on Saturday.

You said the Touch Control had no response...is there fluid in the block? And is the nut still on the hydraulic pump. Careful you don't burn up your pump.

Thanks for the advice. I will pull the pump to inspect. I may need it for my '58 with the loader.

Thanks for the update. I wondered how it was going with the cubfest special.

For what it is worth, the dark smoke might clear up a bit if you adjust the mixture screw on top of the carb. It is metering the air, not gas, so 1/2 turn "out" might lean it up, maybe even more.
