12V conversion

Postby Rebuck33 » Thu Mar 26, 2015 7:24 am

Hey fellows, I am a proud new member. I have been reading this forum for quite some time and am pretty deep into a cub restoration. I have it completely torn down, sand blasted and partially reassembled. Rear tires are back on, fenders and now I am at the 12V conversion thing. I am an electrical engineer so the wiring all makes sense to me. The new bracket I need doesn't! Can I use the old bracket and cut a groove in the new Delco 10SI which would allow the alternator to slide onto one end of the existing bracket? Has anyone tried that?

Above previous discussion on the alternator bracket.

I made the alternator bracket. Took me two tries to get it right.

Do a thorough search of this site. I believe someone was making and selling the bracket.

Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you. Would like to see some progress pictures if you can.

You could do almost any bracket as long as it allowed for lateral movement (tension on belt) and secured the alternator to the Cub w/o hitting the hood. Let us know what you come up with... :coffee:

Clint Carter plasma cut some brackets. You might send him a PM (personal message) and see if he still has some. Also, welcome to the Forum.

That may work. I am not sure why but I thought the wider tab on the delco would be on the bottom but I think it will be very close to aligned if the smaller tab goes on the bottom. Thanks guys.... Now, how long of a belt do I need?

My PO used a threaded rod with nuts. He used the original genny bkt. He jammed nuts when it was inline. It works while it's not up to my standards of craftmanship. Quality is number one.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

22 inch may work, it depends on the pulley size of the fan, there are 3 different sizes 2 from the factory and one aftermarket

I see this is an older thread, but I would like to know if there are any concerns regarding mounting 10SI with the smaller tab down. I have mounted my with larger tab down, but pulleys don’t lineup as well as I would like. Also, had to use 2 handfuls of washers to shim out to tension arm.

:thanx:

I bought the bracket from steiner, had to do some grinding to fit my alternator on it but it worked.

I have one, on my 57, that George Willer mounted with the small tab down, it works fine.
