193 Plow - Restoration Project

Postby PVF1799 » Sat Apr 25, 2015 4:53 pm

This is the 1st post for the restoration of our 193 plow. This plow came to our farm in the late 1950's with Dad's 1st Cub (not Rex'48) that he had to sell because of some hard times. He did manage to save all the implements he purchased - this plow is one of those implements. I last recall using it in the early 1970's with Rex'48.

Today - I disassembled the entire plow. Parts are already in the sandblasting cabinet and one part has been primed w/two coats. Below are the kick-off photos. The photo doesn't show it, but there was still a fair bit of blue left behind the moldboard <sp>. The shear is in good shape. Hope you enjoy my thread.

Please look at my wanted in "The Vine". I need a part for this plow because I went crazy with the small sledge - before I new part of the land-side was cast and not steel.

26-April - Got a bit more done today after a trip to TSC for more blasting material. I changed down to 20 Grit for this job - It takes rust off real nice. I can now change the protective film on my glass also - it just destroyed it.

IMG_4420 (471x800).jpg
After the Rust was removed - found this part was Made in Canada!

I'm no sand blast expert but I don't think you are supposed to aim the gun at the window  :D

I enjoy the updates. That plow is going to be to pretty to stick in the ground I'm afraid.

Morning Ken,

I'm looking forward to following you on this project and you appear to be off to a good start - save for one minor hiccup - hope you get a replacement part soon.

Got a little bit more done after work today.

The Working Side! Should not need much polishing in the field. I will oil it lightly after the back is painted.

Looking good Ken. I want to redo my slat plow this way too.
It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

Send a PM to TST - He has them for most implements.

Also - I've played a little this morning between meetings. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out.

4/28/15

Disassembled totally the depth lever. That's ready for sandblasting. My cabinet was not cooperating this evening. The Chinese hose and hose clamps for the air pressure finally gave up. New hose and clamps tomorrow. Because there is always something to do - I set about cleaning the Plow Beam. I used my Makita right-angle grinder and one of those multi-sheet overlapped sanding discs at 40 GRIT. I think it cleaned up pretty well for how rusty it was.

Personal note to Ed - Hope you're reading all of my updates - wouldn't want you missing a step (it's an inside joke with Scotty D's Dad)

After - Ready for Primer

Really only bolts and small things left like the lift chain. Once I get the decals and the coulter from TST - it should be ready to roll. Good thing it's almost plowing time up here in another 3 weeks....
