Smoke coming from the torque tube

Postby Arthur Dent » Tue Apr 28, 2015 10:30 pm

Would there be any "not really bad" reason why there would be smoke coming out of the opening in the bottom of the bell where the engine bolts to the torque tube?
I noticed it this evening while letting the tractor idle a bit after riding it around the yard. It was white looking, and I could not catch any smell to it, though I didn't really want to get my nose too close. I couldn't catch any burning oil or antifreeze type smells at all (thought it might be steam).

Were you holding your foot on the clutch while it was idling? A well greased TOB will smoke if the clutch is held down for a prolonged period or has been used very frequently over a short period of time.

Hmmm... I always put it into neutral if sitting for any length of time. But, I had been playing with the mower, trying to get the belt tension right... so I probably had used the clutch a fair bit.
I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks.
