In restoring cubs with gear noise what is the most common problem worn gears or bad bearings? is there a simple way to detect where the noise is coming from before disassembly.

Bad bearings will cause rapid and abnormal gear wear. Worn gears with good bearings and good shafts should still give good long service but may have some noise. The condition of the bearings is crucial.

I am sure to catch some heat over this, but my opinion most any tractor 40 years is going to make some gear noise, if you can get some 200 wt or even add grease will quite it down , If you are not using the tractor every day. Not wanting to for go complete rebuild.

Mine mainly roars bad in reverse when backing up a hill. But, it is a little noisy in the back end all around.
