I helped a friend, Chris, replace a toasted TOB today. The root cause of the replacement was the pressure plate fingers were adjusted (properly, he and I put the TOB in, in November) and there was little threads let in the jam nut. One of the nuts came off and thus the TOB was toast. We solved the problem by replacing the adjusting bolts with longer ones.
Clutch pedal free travel was adjusted to 1".
He now has a slight rattle when the clutch is out, put a little pressure on the clutch and the rattle goes away. Did I cause this problem by putting in the longer bolts or is there another problem that has been overlooked? Chris and I eagerly await your sage advice. Thanks.
Bill

Re: TOB/Clutch Problem
Worn holes in the TOB hanger allowing the TOB to move a little and rattle. Needs to be loose enough to pivot but not so loose to flop around. Time for new hanger assembly and rod most likely. Might be able to squeeze the hanger tighter but don't know how long it would stay.

Re: TOB/Clutch Problem
Also look through the hand hole and make sure one of the fingers is not out of adjustment. had one a while back act like that and the U shaped spring had come unhooked that holds the fingers down. Hopefully you soaked the bearing in oil overnight before installing.

Re: TOB/Clutch Problem
Hi Bill, I find that fingernail polish works well on the thread on the adjustment stud and nut….Probably thread locker would work better but I was taught fingernail polish some time (ahem) ago…..Take care…Dave
