Restoration Planter 172, Fertilizer 101A and Cultivator

Postby PVF1799 » Wed May 20, 2015 7:06 pm

I'm starting on my next project.

Tonight I worked on:
1. The diverter. I have parts on order for the diverter - they are still available from IH - the price is very well shall we say high. BTW - You can still buy the whole assembly for just under $600 :D
2. Two of the Spring Tooth Cultivators. Got them disassembled - there in the cabinet.

More pix as we go along.

Went through the "Magic Barn" Today. Found some neat stuff for my restoration and some NOS that has never been in the rain but rusted anyway.

Also had a slow meeting day today from the home office - Got a bit done in the blasting cabinet.

Thomas,

At the rate he keeps digging stuff out of the "Magic Barn," there may not be much left. :)

Started Early This Morning - Below are a few photos from today with some interesting notes. I also started a US Patent Search w/o success yet. I'm looking for the original Patent Numbers for the Richmond Planter. If you have one that you can still read the numbers on - please end photo to pvf1799@gmail.com

I can't help you on the patent number, I have had a few NOS richmond hoppers, and lots of used ones, but none had the patent sticker. I can verify the bottoms being red. The bottom plate, could be red, mill finish, or blue depending on year of production. I have had 20+ NOS Pawl covers, and all have been mill finish. I believe the Richmond Hopper got its start with the American Seeding Machine Co. , which IH bought sometime around the early 20's, but I haven't put enough effort into researching it. Most of the patents were likely expired on the the hopper itself by the time of cub production, as IH produced the same basic hopper since 1926 with the 100 series planters.

Had a pretty good day!

I did confirm by looking at my original 1950's hopper casting that the underside is just primed. I took liberty and lightly painted it IH Red.
Two Spring Tooth Cultivators are done reassembled. Sorry for the helter-skelter photos. You'll notice in the IH stool the hopper lid is drying there.

Started in this weekend on the 101A Fertilizer Attachment. Got the unit disassembled and cleaned up in the sand blasting cabinet. The hose was an NOS find in the "Magic Barn" Our original is still in good working order. We've always washed it in water, then dipped in old motor oil and left to drip dry.

I see Kenbrandt is still occupying the right side of the ol noggin….Nice thread….I'm into putting together a disc hiller and eventually a cultivator assembly myself…Although I use the phrase " putting together" rather than restoration…  ….Dave...

Fertilizer unit painted and assembled.

When I assemble - I mix Never Seize and Grease together - the heads of carriage bolts and wherever two surfaces join receive a coating. All parts painted in total prior to assembly so there is paint where there was never paint before. It ought to last well. New cotter pins except for the Big ones - I sandblast, prime and paint those if they are in serviceable condition. The ones that run in grease were. So after the coat of paint on the shaft dries, I'll flip it over and install the chain tightener. The shaft was primed only prior to assembly - after having to strip the clutch rod on Rex'48 because I got it stuck in the bell housing - I don't finish paint shafts till after assembly.

The paint won't be cured - but I've got to use it this weekend to plant corn. Ready to run. :D
